I re-watched Joss Whedon's Serenity (2005) last night, having only seen it once before in the theater. I enjoyed the television show, and I love Whedon's work, but this second viewing left me fairly cold. The River character is so predominant in the plot, and the character tics are SO prevalent (the cryptic phrases, the head tilt, the freaking out on the crew) that I found her insufferable. Really, I prefer every other character on the crew to her.
And then there's the garbled foreign language they all speak. Very overused to the point where it is twee.
There are many great moments in this film, and that's why I liked it so much when I first saw it. But the bad came close to outweighing the good this second time around. I wonder if the show still holds up as well as I remember it.
