When I was growing up, there was only one "grindhouse", the infamous Cinema I and Cinema II in downtown Newburgh NY:
It was in a REALLY bad part of town (and even recently there was an article that Newburgh is the "murder capitol of New York"). Going there was out of the question, although in 80-81 I was starting to get an interest in horror so I'd start asking my dad to take me there. It wasn't happening. In 1981, it closed after vandals destroyed it. Probably a good thing in hindsight, as I'd probably start taking it upon myself to go there once I was able to drive, and I might not be alive today as a result.

It's actually pretty interesting, how a theater where Lucille Ball made her stage debut eventually became a horror/porn grindhouse, and then has been restored apparently.
