I think the reason is often because they are smart enough to release them on weekends where there's not a lot else coming out. This is often a good time for horror films since it's kind of a slow time of year for other movies.

I agree - there really hasn't been jack out lately - when you see Hansel and Gretal at the top you know its slow down time on big releases at the movies.
