I dunno. Things like cocaine, roller skates, etc, were all 70s trademarks. Just because it's a tracking shot from behind the skates wouldn't make me think PTA borrowed it.
However, many of the porn scenes in Boogie Nights WERE borrowed directly from 70s porn movies. And a lot of scenes from "The Dirk Diggler Story" by Amber Waves were taken from Exhausted, a documentary about John Holmes. The old Criterion LD had these clips, but they didn't get the rights to put them on the DVD or Blu.

They were trademarks of that short era, for sure. However, I have a strange feeling the director of Boogie Nights was just like us kids in the late 70's and early 80's watching these films late at night on Showtime and HBO. He and I are roughly the same age, too. I can almost bet he knows all the same films we do...

We had a theatre in downtown Reno that, although immaculate and well maintained with a great staff, had the PERFECT vibe for showing horror films. I tried to go there as often as I could. Back in the '80's I had the urge to document the showings at that theatre and take pictures, ect. It's one of my biggest regrets - not doing so. One of my favorite teachers in high school had a part time job there and I wish I had asked for a tour or something.
As for Mother's Day, I don't know if it played my hometown. It played Vegas, L.A. and San Francisco for sure. "What was it Kubrick said?" |

'The shot around the pool showing all the party-goers was influenced by a similar one in I Am Cuba, which features a shot that begins on a rooftop and goes down into a swimming pool. “I feel proud that we came back up out of the pool for dialogue,” Anderson adds.' Besides lots of Exhausted being borrowed, the porn movie scenes are all homages to actual 70 porn films, mostly John Holmes stuff like Jade Pussycat. Yeah, wasn't the Rollergirl tracking scene part of that amazing opening shot in the disco? (Seriously, check out some of the camera work in Boogie Nights. That opening scene, one long single shot that begins outside the club, then swoops down inside and introduces every main character is one of my favorite sequences in film history. Then it's reversed at the end of the film, the "where are they now" at Jack's house. Sorry, PTA, this film is your masterpiece. Not the pretentious Magnolia, or the well-acted but practically non-narrative The Master. There Will Be Blood comes close, but Boogie Nights is still his best film, and probably always will be)
Back to the borrowed porn scenes, I've heard the Brock Landers scene, where he comes into the restaurant is taken from a 70s porn. Isn't the first Dirk Diggler shoot (ha ha) where he auditions for Amber also one? Someone mentioned Dave's Old Porn. I'd like Dave to do a Boogie Nights episode, maybe have PTA as a guest. Or if PTA's too damn Serious Filmmaker to appear on Dave's Old Porn, I bet John C. Reilly would do it in a heartbeat.
