Incredible Melting Man

Well, I haven't seen this in years, but it was on The Movie Channel at 4 am this morning, so my vcr was recording. Hope to watch it again tonight, and see if it's as good as I remember as a kid. It's definitely hard to find on tape, and who knows if there will ever be a dvd!!

Damn. I've got to get cable one of these day - or the dish or whatever. I've wanted to see that one since I read about it in Famous Monsters magazing in the early 80s. Dagnabbit!

You know, the funny thing is, Mutley, I might only have memories of the stuff in Famous Monsters myself, because I was young, and I really don't recall much of the actual film. Damn, That's what old age does to you!!! And the only reason I have cable is because they are giving me 6 months free digital and about 30 movie stations at my new place, if not, I would stick to the basic cable alone.

Shan, that's a great deal man... I bet you're stocking up on blank tapes. I'm probably gonna move after this year, because the property has never been wired for cable, and we can't attach anything to the building, i.e., a dish. Lame. Anyway, I'll try to get my next landlord to throw me a deal like yours.

And by the way...

Happy birthday!

Thanks for the Happy Birthday, Mutley.

As for the blank tapes, yes, I am taping like crazy, but just to watch, for 2 reasons. Basically, if it's something I want that bad, I get it on dvd, so I really don't want to start building a tape collection again. The other problem, which hopefully will be solved by the cable guy (Not Jim Carey) today, is that the cable tiles and goes to black. They told me I wasn't getting a strong enough signal strength. We'll see. The Mpeg artifacts are definitely evident in the movies I have been watching. With Incredible Melting Man, since it was so hard to get, I taped it in SVHS, with hopes of dumping it to vcd. Of course, after watching it, if it is bad, I won't go to the trouble. And, of course with the signal strength issue, it probably won't be worth the time if it goes to black several times during the film. The one good thing about this is catching up on films I haven't seen and not paying rental fees for shitty movies.... Saw Argento's Phantom on Showtime a couple of weeks ago, and it was as bad as everyone says!!!

Ha ha, poor Dario.

I hear ya on the tapes, and that was my old, primal media-monkey brain reacting like that. Of course with dvd, VHS isn't a desired storage media. I guess I just figured there was a bunch of stuff on cable that the dvd rights are up in the air right now on. Others are always torturing me with reports of obscure Hammer and other classics on the various cable channels.

And that blows about the cable signal man. I hope Jim can hook you up. Don't piss him off!

YES! I second and third the request for MGM to get off their duff and put THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN on DVD. It's always been a guilty pleasure fave that screams for a remake! It falls into that "I know it's bad, but what's not to love?" category...

Actually, IMAGE was slated to release it (according to Fangoria), but there is another region 2 (check out Luminous Film and Video Wurks for the stats.... its widescreen even).

Personally, I'd like to see MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER release their version of it on dvd!

I was wondering if MGM actually had this. If they released it not long ago on video, then a dvd might not be far off. I may just have to hunt down the VHS to tide me over.

(if I can find it for like 2 bucks that is )

Make no mistake this is a scary movie. I saw this in a theater at Long Beach California in the 70's. The only problem after I saw this film was I didn't used mustard and ketchup in my food for one year. If you saw it you'll know why.

Well, last night I sat down and watched it. It is definitely dated, but holds a lot of punch. It suffers most, from what many other "monster" movies do. The script is terrible. You cannot buy the reasons his flesh is melting, not that they really explain it. You also have no explanation why he needs human flesh to sustain him. It is ludicrous that only a general and scientist go out looking for him, and there is not a big disturbance, or media presence in the area, when mutilated corpses keeps showing up. I won't go into all the ludicrousness of the script, but suffice to say, it is abundant!!! The space shots are all stock footage, and do not match the look of the film, which I can live with, and was pretty common practice, because of the costs. The acting was atrocious, which probably didn't even need to be stated. You don't get high caliber with a title like that. What sets the film apart, and what makes it great and pretty scary today, is Rick Baker's amazing make up effects. My God, the make up is horrendous!! Disgusting, disturbing and unforgettable!! Lots of good close-ups, and when you see the slime dripping from him, it is such a subtle detail that adds to the vileness!! The corpses, with the exception of one head, look pretty good too. I am a big Euro-horror fan, but a lot of those films lack the realistic look that this low budget film has. It is definitely one to watch if you are a horror fan. If it is inexpensive, if it ever comes out on dvd, I will snag a copy for sure.

When I was a child, I bought the tie-in book to this film. The cover was truly vile as it featured the Melting Man in his various stages of, well, melt. The book was a corking read as it was pretty uncompromising stuff. Unbelievably, I've still not seen this film after all these years. I'd purchase the DVD in a heartbeat....

Ooops! Just re-read the thread and I've now found a link to the R2 version. It will be mine....
