The early reviews starting to trickle in are pretty positive. ShockTillYouDrop's review was glowing, as they previewed it at SXSW either yesterday or today.

As for the movie being shelved... it was likely due to MGM going bankrupt when they were initially going to do that ill-advised 3D conversion (and not because the movie tested poorly). And then the completed film got shelved because MGM took a long time getting its debt consolidated. Then when it emerged from bankruptcy, the new CEOs decided to unload Cabin and the Red Dawn remake to other studios (Lionsgate and FilmDistrict, respectively).

Looking forward to this!
Probably the most excited I've been about a new horror film since the F13th remake...
Let's just hope this doesn't turn out the way that did!

Yes. Lionsgate decided on the spring 2012 release to capitalize on Chris Hemsworth's popularity after Thor came out. Speaking of the guy, he's going to be everywhere this year. Cabin in the Woods, Avengers (Whedon also wrote and directed that), Snow White and the Huntsman and the Red Dawn remake.

Granted, two of those films were made prior to his star-making turn in Thor, but I digress.

I know not everyone loves him- but I love just about everything Whedon does- Cant wait to check this out and I hope it isn't a "limited" release so I can see it at the theatre.

Box Office Mojo lists Cabin in the Woods as a "nationwide" release for April 13th. So barring a last minute theater reduction (aka limited release), it should get a 1,500-2,500 theater count.

In short, the reviews make it seem like the next Scream -- aka meta deconstruction of horror trends (torture porn, Asian remakes, et al). I don't know if it'll be a sleeper hit like Scream, but who knows?

I'm not a die-hard Joss Whedon fan, but I've liked a lot of his output. Not everything he touches is instant gold, but I do like his self-deprecating and witty personality. Cabin in the Woods and The Avengers look to be one of the brighter spots of 2012, movie-wise.

So far on Rotten Tomatoes 19 fresh and only one rotten score for this movie- I liked the trailer- I HAVE to see this when it comes out next week.

Just got back from seeing it. The theatre was actually pretty full considering it was Friday at 12:40. Hope that's a good sign...

I liked it. I'm not quite sure where it falls on the "like scale", but it was definitely enjoyable. I'm not completely certain that the actual horror elements were anything spectacular but if you enjoy Joss Whedon's dialog, then you'll probably enjoy this. I found it to be more funny than scary. Kind of like a feature length Buffy ep without Buffy. The casting was pretty great too. Some cool cameos from Joss people.

It may have been a little convoluted at times, and it wasn't scary, but I enjoyed it and am looking forward to seeing it again when there aren't theatre distractions.

Soon as this hit's the dollar theater I will see it then. That's about fair price for today's modern horror flicks.

I had high expectations from this one. The theater was packed. The movie was fun and clever, but unfortunately fell short of what i was hoping for. I liked the premise but the picture just went off the rails for me in the last 20 min. overall it's definitely worth seeing, but i would recommend waiting for a DVD rental, or at least pay matinee prices. im gonna give A Cabin In The Woods a healthy 7 out of 10.

The last 20 minutes or so are what really won me over. It's rare to see that kind of ingenuity in movies these days.

Just got back from seeing it. It was horrible. It was pretty much Joss Whedon with a hardon for Evil Dead with pot jokes plus random horror monsters thrown in a blender. I really don't understand the rave reviews it's getting. Don't believe the hype guys. Save your cash. After watching Cabin the Woods I am bit weary for the upcoming Avengers movie.

Ill have to keep my expectations in check- critic reviews are really good but a couple of you have already said nothing special. I love Whedons humor and writing so Ill probably love it - but Im glad I heard some of the negative thoughts to lower my expectations a bit.
