Red Scorpion (Arrow vs Synapse)

The Synapse edition is due out later this year, but the Arrow blu-ray is due out on Monday.

Reviews for the Arrow disc are starting to pop up on the net.

Here's one (includes screencaps).

Without even reading any review the Synapse wins for me...

Blu-Ray + DVD combo.
Better sound.
Picture restored by former Lowry.
And by the sound of it, bigger and better extras.

Arrow's packaging gets major points with me. That, and the fact that they're beating Synapse to the puch is enough reason for me to buy the Arrow disc. U.S independent labels do great work but I wish they would focus a little more attention on packaging designs. Specialty packaging makes the release stand out more.

Not for me. I'd rather have the film look the way the director and the filmakers intended it to look. I mean who cares about a cool looking cover and a ten minute interview with the DP if the movie itself looks like dogshit? So, I'd rather give my money to the company that's going to prseent the film and its transfer in the best and most respectful way. And 9 times out of 10 that company is going to be Synapse rather than Arrow.

I know of at least one occasion where the same transfers were used by both Arrow and Synapse (last year's EXTERMINATOR). It seems that Synapse's release of RED SCORPION will sport the better transfer and most people will choose to wait for that version but, personally, I just don't want to wait. I don't consider the film to be that good so the Arrow release is more than enough for me. I have no reason to believe the PQ on Arrow's version will be terrible, especially considering the age of the film (and other releases of similar films made about the same time, like McBain). The problems with transfers on Arrow releases seem to be with some of the Eurohorror titles.

What is a few months after years of waiting...

And for a transfer made by the same guys who did the Bonds, Star Wars, Indiana Jones... is reason enough for me.

Red Scorpion was a relatively recent announcement. There was no indication that it was going to be released prior to the Synapse announcement so I can't really say that I've waited years for it and should wait a few more months. Synapse has barely hinted that their version is coming out any time soon. There's already a copy of the film on it's way to me as we speak - why wait "a few more months"?

Sounds like a pretty good reason to wait.

For quality thatīs one...

Red Scorpion was announced a little more than a year ago.
And if youīre in such a hurry, why didnīt you grab the german steelbook that was released month ago?

It is a gorgeous steelbook.

But what is packaging Vs. Image, sound, and extras? All to me.

Donīt get me wrong. Iīm not pointing any finger at Arrow and Iīm not a fanboy of any company.
I simply try to buy the best edition. Many times in the past I have favored Arrow over BU and vice versa.
In some cases I even bought one edition from both companies.

Synapse review: http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/55477/red-scorpion/

I got mine last week, and it's another solid release from Synapse. Packed with extras and a nice booklet. And the 5.1 mix sounds superb! I really forgot how much fun this film was. $15 well spent.

I grabbed the Synapse blu-ray but haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

But a screengrab at caps-a-holic captured something pretty interesting. See if you can notice what's missing:

Caps-A-Holic

I hope that's just a frame or 2.

I don't know WTF is up with that. I sure didn't notice anything like that when I viewed the Synapse Blu-ray. If that's not just some digital gremlin artifact from the screen capture, it must be quicker than the eye blinks.
