FROM BEYOND and PHANTASM II from Shout Factory 3/26
Scream Factory stimulate your pineal gland this March with a new hi-def upgrade of Stuart Gordon's FROM BEYOND (1986)! Based on a short by H.P. Lovecraft, this thematic follow-up from the RE-ANIMATOR team finds Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton and Ken Foree peeking into an alternate dimension, thanks to a science-babble contraption known as The Resonator. However, technology has its price; side effects include brain eating, bondage wearing, and constantly-morphing creatures who'll twist your head clean off. Shout Factory promise to one-up the out-of-print MGM DVD (an outstanding release at its time) with fresh supplemental content!

The Ball is Back in Don Coscarelli's PHANTASM II (1988), coming this March from Shout Factory! Reggie the Ice Cream Man and Little Orphan Mike continue their funeral home fight against The Tall Man, an enigmatic mortician who's harvesting corpses for trans-dimensional slave labor. Along the way they pick up a psychic chick and a cowgirl, and stage an extended showdown against their nemesis' killer dwarves, reanimated corpses, and his flying silver spheres that'll squirt your fluids across his marble floor. Short on sense but long on imagination, this sequel has been a phan favorite since it first hit screens (though in recent years I've totally flip-flopped on it) and Scream Factory promise to load the release up with special features (the prior Universal DVD was barren).

Has there ever been an unrated release of Phantasm 2? I know the MPAA had a field day with it in order to secure an "R" rating. If a cut exists I'd like to see Shout at least perhaps offer a seamless branching option like My Bloody Valentine had, even if the materials are a bit under par with the theatrical cut.

There was a workprint of PHANTASM II floating around with some additional footage, but I never had it. I don't believe a finished unrated version exists.

from beyond will be mine for sure, phantasm ii not that bothered about, it's my favorite phantasm but i have the UK box set so would only stump up the cash for it if they released the uncut version. I do have to say though that shout factory are releasing some fantastic stuff onto the blu ray market, there are a lot of titles they have planed for 2013 that will be mine, so glad i got my region free blu ray player as i suspect most if not all will be region A releases

I really want to know if they will include the extra footage of these two movies, which are the unrated scenes of Phantasm II and the additional special effects footage of From Beyond that can be seen in the Stephen King´s World of Horror documentary.
I have seen the Phantasm II workprint which is on the German Marketing DVD Disc 2 which can also be found in the Austrian XT DVD as disc 2. The quality is not good but the extra gore is great. This extra disc includes: Angus Scrimm @ Fangoria Convention (ca. 10 Min.) - Behind the Scenes (ca. 120 Min.) - Phantasmania Convention (ca. 67 Min.) - Fangoria Convention (ca. 30 Min.) - Workprint (ca. 104 Min.) - Original Trailer - 3 TV-Spots - Bildergalerie - Artwork-Galerie It would really be disappointing if these scenes would not be included on the collector´s editions. If they can't be found in good quality they should at least be included in the extras. |

Cliff has hinted on more than one occasion that Phantasm II will be a jam-packed SE, whether or not this means there's going to be an extended cut remains to be seen but I'll be very disappointed if "jam-packed" just means a bunch of talking-head featurettes but no longer cut. We need a definitive version of this film, something that'll put to rest all the mystery behind the workprint once and for all.

It's not really fair to compare legit releases to German bootleg outfits. They get a lot more slack from fans (and apparently the authorities). When someone like Shout goes with a "better than nothing" approach the whole world jumps down their throat like on They Live.
I'm not sure how possible an uncut version is. To reference a work prints is not the same thing as saying there's an uncut version. If they never completed post production on even a few frames of extra gore it is difficult and costly to re-instate. Shout hasn't exactly been going out of their way to do new transfers for Scream Factory, so I wouldn't expect much it terms of earth shattering versions of a film.

Sweet! My foley instructor this semester actually did all the foley effects for From Beyond. She also worked on the original Fright Night, Exorcist III, Crawlspace, Predator and Dolores Claiborne and a couple Tim Burton films.
