I really hated this movie. It wasn't scary at all and the CGI didn't help.

I thought it was good until the end. Plus I was hoping MAMA would look more frightening.

Mama was just okay to me. I thought it was a bit on the ridiculous side, I really didn't like the ending at all either.

The child actors were quite good. The effects were also good I thought, and I liked the literal brokenness of Mama. It was creepy.

The ending caught me off guard as a bit more brutal than I expected, and it was one of the few "solve the puzzle to stop the ghost" plots that kind of worked for me. I usually hate those.

If the end surprised you then you mustn't be familiar with DelTorro's films. There's usually always a tragic twist to the story at the end. It didn't surprise me at all.

Well I've seen all of them (except Pacific Rim, yet), but I didn't see that particular twist coming.

I wasn't trying particularly hard to guess the ending as I watched either, but the only thought that struck me as I watched was that maybe all the adults were going to die, and Mama would stay with both children. Glad that was wrong.

I got the sense that it wasn't going to end happily and that was only because I knew what the director's films are like. I'll agree it's not obvious, I think I've just come to expect these ending from him.

I wouldn't say I hated it but I do agree with your ladder comments.
