Spelunking another '80s obscurity, Scorpion Releasing give Jeffrey Obrow & Stephen Carpenter's THE POWER (1984) its DVDebut! It's bad news on campus when a college professor discovers a small Mexican curio -- turns out it's actually a religious figurine that harbors the spirit of the ancient Aztec god Destacatyl, capable of possessing its owner and manipulating their dark side. Eventually the idol falls into the hands of a tabloid reporter and a bunch of kids. Supernatural shenanigans ensue, including floating dishes, facial mutations and death by garbage disposal. Will they be able to resist the demon's lure, or will they succumb to "The Power"? Another quirky Obrow / Carpenter collaboration, sandwiched between THE DORM THAT DRIPPED BLOOD (1982) and their slime-o-rama monstershow THE KINDRED (1987). No word on supplements yet.

DVD Preorder (1/7/14)

Always had a soft spot for The Power (1984). It's not great but atmospheric and entertaining, plus some cool f/x. I'm super curious how the transfer will turn out.
I recently rewatched The Beach Girls. The old DVD has a decent transfer, should look good in HD.

I think "The Power" was filmed in 1980, but didn't see any kinda release in theaters until early 1984...

Did you ever listen to the Obrow & Carpenter commentary track on the Dorm disc? They didn't start on The Power until 82/83.

That minor little gap from filming to release for THE POWER was noticed - even that night I saw the movie at the $1 theater, we were wondering "just how old is this film???" since it seemed a tad dated already (in production design, that is). Love the film though. THE KINDRED - now that film was criminally under-appreciated.
I love how the original poster art is used on the new products coming out - without all that stupid "scratchy-scratchy" effect used. They don't need it - original poster art is fine! hi

My copy of THE POWER is getting delivered today, so I can't comment on the picture quality yet. However, it does look like the extras are limited to a "Katarina's Nightmare Theater" wraparound trivia sketches, the original trailer, and some other Scorpion trailers (DOGS, GRIZZLY, SORCERESS, DAY OF THE ANIMALS, and LURKERS). Looking forward to revisiting it!

THE POWER looks as good as it will ever look I guess
Overall PQ is very good
There are more than a few jump cuts but scratches and other debris are kept to a minimum
My only complaint is the case is an ecopack so I switched to a regular empty case I had lying around
The case it came in was a white case which does not look quite right

I do the same thing. I really hate these eco-cases with holes in them...but most studios seem to use them now.

I haven't seen any. I did receive mine from Amazon the other day, but haven't had time to watch it yet.

The Flavia Blu Ray cover displayed on amazon shows a "digital remastered" bar at the top of the cover. I do not hope that Walter is going to ruin his classic covers with this dollar bin charme
