Look at the stuff that's on Netflix now: Computer Chess, Lovelace, Frances, Maniac (the remake)... almost all the movies on my Wish List to see last year (just waiting on Leviathan, Gravity, maybe the second Hunger Games)

I watched The Lone Ranger last night, and found it to be a really enjoyable piece of escapism. I dunno why this got ragged on so bad. It takes its time getting to the good stuff, but once there, all the build up makes the conclusion that much more fun. So I have no problem with the length of it. About the only gripe I had was with the wrap-around scenes with old Tonto at the fair. I understand why they did it, so that the various reveals at the end work (and they do work, very well), but for the most part, whenever they cut back to the fair, it always feels unnecessary. And for a movie that's supposed to end on a high note, it's actually kind of depressing to see the character, aged and forgotten, and to know that the Ranger is probably long dead. In any case, I thought it was a lot of fun. And all the good stuff said about the conclusion set on the train is 100% true - that was wonderful.

Finished Orange is the New Black S2 last night, and I'm pretty disappointed in the overall watch. Whereas S1 felt fresh, clever, and scary, this season was over-sentimental, trying, and eye roll-inducing. The cheesy piano music that chimed in whenever there was a very special moment became a running joke at my place; the character Vi was a one-note villainess; and the "origins" were nowhere near as fun as last season. Disappointing, and I understand the need to get this out quickly--but what a miss.

I would like to comment if I could actually post in the forums. Nobody seems to be too interested in reviewing and/or approving my posts for some reason

Nightcrawler (2014)

The reviews for this one have been very good, and so it was with relatively high hopes that I went into this over the weekend. It attempts to tell two stories: one of a very disturbed man played by Jake Gyllenhaal, and the other narrative is about the media and its manipulation in the internet age. Both are solid focuses for a film; neither is given the attention it deserves here.

Gyllenhaal's performance is excellent. But aside from the stunning car chase scenes, I never felt invested in his outcome. And while I thought the media manipulation angle was a strong one, it too never felt as explored as it needed to be in order to state a sure "message."

Maleficent (2014)

What a miserable, dismal film this is. Jolie looks spectacular, of course, but wow, what a lazy script and terrible casting for Stephan. What about him is appealing to not only a human woman, but a fairy woman? And enough so that his betrayal turns a once pure woman into a vengeful shrew? This worthless, squeaky voiced asshole gets two good-looking women? How? How does this happen?

I've been re-visiting and polishing my 2006 film tracker and I'm absolutely AMAZED at how many movies I've watched throughout that year. I was still at a shitty job back then where I had to work 1-2 hours overtime every day, yet I still managed to watch that many. Sometimes even four to five titles a day

Renting DVDs was no option so I always had to buy. Bought way too many Lionsgate DTV crap and based on ratings I watched way too many crap in general.

238 first time viewings (!) of movies I bought on DVD. I wouldn't spent that much money these days for sure

Just watched Mighty Joe Young (1949) as part of my Thanksgiving Day viewings. I hadn't seen it since the days of WWOR's Thanksgiving marathons. As a kid it was my least favorite of the Kong trilogy. As an adult seeing it I really enjoyed it. That scene with the cowboys vs. Joe is dynamite as well as Joe's nightclub riot.
