John Carpenter's DARK STAR (1974) from VCI 10/2

Looks like VCI is finally getting around to that upgrade of John Carpenter's DARK STAR (1974) with their "Thermostellar" edition, due 10/2.

Special Features include:
* Let There Be Light: The Odyssey of Dark Star - Includes clips from a rare student film directed by Dan O'Bannon. Featuring exclusive interviews with actors, cast and crew. Also featuring an archival interview with John Carpenter, as well as the final interview of Dan O'Bannon. Produced and directed by Daniel Griffith (in HD).
* Interview with Sci-Fi author Alan Dean Foster (in SD).
* 3D Guide to the Dark Star ship (in SD).
* Full-length audio commentary by super fan Andrew Gilchrist.

This is one that I can't imagine gaining much of an improvement from in HD, unless it gets a restoration. It might be...but it's one I'll wait to see some reviews or comparisons on first.

Even VCI's newer DVD edition's transfer was still far from great. That's probably more due to the original 16mm stock or the blow-up to 35mm.

There is an import Blu-ray, and from what I've heard it's not a significant jump over the SD.

I never upgraded from the old, old VCI disc, so I'm getting this more for the documentary than anything else.

VCI's first R1 DVD of this was dismal, with tape artifacts.

Their re-release was pretty bad; smudgy, with compression issues. The British Blu-ray sounds like it is very similar, perhaps slightly better.

It would be nice if they would just do a straight transfer (with color correction; I'm not a maniac) and no DNR or bullshit, and slap it on a Blu-ray with the special features on a separate disc to avoid compression problems.

The Blu-ray's artwork does look great:

VCI usually has pretty bad artwork on their releases, but that looks nice.

I read the German Blu-ray version is one of the worst ever. Hopefully VCI gets the job done.
