My favorite directors would be
Scorsese (still the most important living director in the US today) Coppola (his MEGALOPOLIS is the most awaited movie in years for me!) Argento (first love dies hard)

Tough choice, I'd say hadn't these three directors made the movies they have I wouldn't be into films at all: Alfred Hitchcock, John Carpenter, David Cronenberg.
