Although very well done in terms of acting, I didn't care for it...it is slow-moving, unrelentingly grim and ultimately depressing...SPOILER: And I hate movies that, no matter how well they're done, give you nothing and no one to "root" for...that's all I will say for now.

One of the most disturbing movies you'll ever see. This is guaranteed to unsettle even the hardened horror fan.

Channel 4 in the UK showed this film around 3 years ago. Although it's not the sort of film you'd watch twice, it is definitely worth viewing if you like your movies a little on the grim side...

I'd say rent rather than buy. And treat yourself to a good comedy afterwards. This is bleak stuff....

This is one of my top ten least favorites ever. It was a long horrid brutal exercise for no good reason. I like some killings and brutality mind you, but this was just over the top grim. I also agree with the above poster that there is no one to even remotely to root for. In addition, there is no real message or even distant humor.

For sure rent before you buy, I can't imagine too many folks would want to watch this over and over.

Seriously, if you like brutal along the lines of Henry or Maniac get it. Right away.

Like it, or hate it, Funny Games is a very interesting film.
Although I cannot imagine anyone to "like" this!

But THERE IS a real message.

I actually had a talk with the director 2 years ago and he mentioned something that I think everyone will agree on.
"If you feel like you can't watch the film and you leave the theatre, well, that's great. It means that you don't need it."
And he is 100% to the point.

What Haneke does in Funny Games is to take the usual elements of a thriller and adapt them to real life. In real life middle aged husbands and wives don't turn to fuckin' Rambo 15 minutes before the end. And a knife that appears just before the end won't save you. And dogs die. And kids can be killed too. Note that we never get a glimpse of real gory details: what we get is the reflection of the violence.

So, what haneke says in Funny Games is that, if you like violence in cinema, if you think that violence is "cool", well have it - raw, painful and ugly as it REALLY is.

That's why the killers are often facing the camera winking (is this the right word?) at us - the viewers, asking us questions about what should they do with their hostages. Because we are PARTNERS in their crime.

Now, I may disagree with that and I may find it preachy but what a great director he is! I mean, the son of a bitch simply asks for some eggs in the beginning and you feel sooo weird! Great film making from any point of view - editing, acting, unbelievable use of music... This is real cinema in my book.

Well said Chaostar. "Funny Games" is almost a unique film in the way that it attacks audience's expectations. Personally I see the film as an angry attack on screen (in particular Hollywood)violence and its use as entertainment. Haneke made a realistic film but at the same time he uses devices that uncomfortably "remind" people that we are watching "entertainment". It is probably the toughest film I've ever sat through with the possible exception of "Henry"

-I placed my order tonight.

I saw a movie simular to this from what I read,,, but I cannot recall what the movie was called. But I remeber it was a family of 4 or 5- It started with the mom, dad, son and a little girl. But I remeber it was like 2 or 3 theifs broke into an house and there was an scene where one of the guys raped the son in the parents bed room.

I am hopeing this is not the same film. but either way the one I kinda remeber was pretty cool

Thanks for the reviews ..... will let you know what I thought of it.
