I bought the new DVD release of the original today and I gotta say...there's no way to top it. I saw absolutly no flaws. At least with other recent re-makes you could argue that the originals were low budget and they're getting a chance with higher budgets (and their plots were pretty basic). But with Stepford Wives it's not a zombie or gore filled story so a larger budget isn't neccessary to improve effects and the story is suchy a story from the 70's (women's rights and equality) that you really can't bring it into the 21st century. Katherine Ross' Joanna was a photographer who put her aspirations aside to have her family but tries to keep herself active in photography whereas Kidman's Joanna is a TV exec who was fired? I think the main theme in the story was lost.

I agree with that 100% and that's where they lost me within the 1st five minutes of the film.

Well I have to ask why you even saw it if that was a huge disappointment for you. Almost all of the TV spots and trailers set up the movie by explaining who Joanna is and why she moves to Stepford.

Because I thought the comedic aspects of the movie would make up for the lameness of the new plot, I was wrong. That wasn't the main thing that disappointed me anyway it's just what kept me shaking my head in disgust throughout the movie.

Is it worth owning? I meant the original version (of course)?

The original version, hell yes, it's one of my favorite films.

I was very disappointed in the remake, which I caught at the theater few nights ago. I'm a big fan of the original movie, which is infinitely superior.

It's certainly not for everyone (my dad and his girlfriend thought it was boring and one of the worst they've seen... grrr ) but even though the pace is slow I think it's one of the most interesting films out there and endlessly quoteable.

In fact, Shoes and I spent practically a whole chat quoting lines from the movie. See my sig for an example.

In fact -gasp- I think the original Stepford Wives just might be my new favorite movie of all time! (At least for the moment).

Myself and two beers sat down last night to watch the remake.

Going in I kept one thing straight in my head: This is NOT a horror film, it's a comedy. So I was not expecting to be scared (and I wasn't disapointed).

There are many scenes from the original in this, but since the tone is much more light-hearted, they felt as different as they were the same.

I think much of the time we're unfair toward comedies, if they don't have us falling out of our chair in hysterics, we consider they weren't funny enough. This remake is a "Black-comedy", and I don't think it was ever meant to have us rolling in the aisles. As far as the humor went, it was exactly what I expected, a sideways glance at the stupidity of supressing women as a lifestyle. We get to laugh at ourselves, but that's about it.

The GOOD: Some nice humor, and unexpectd bashing of some American Businesses "He works for AOL", "Really? Is that why it's so slow?" Nicole Kidman looks gorgeous, I could watch her all day long. The main characters drive the same car as I do

The BAD: Without menace, treading a well worn path (the story is well known) is problematic. Why are we watching? A stupid CGI dog. Also, the tacked on ending (which goes beyond the original) is truly lame. The people that made this film just didn't have the balls to give us a downbeat ending, so we get this lame Avengers rip-off.

Worth owning? For most of you, probably not. Worth renting? For most of you, probably not. Forgive me, Kidman is just too cute for me to complain too much

As a film - 4.5 out of 10
As a HORROR film: 0 out of ten.
