I guess my favorite will always be Dracula (1958), but there are still a few I haven't seen. A very high energy finish accompanied by a great musical score.
I think I just saw the worst last night in Satanic Rites. Spoilers: Dracula getting caught up in a hawthorne bush and then rolling around with his foot caught looked more like something that might happen to Inspector Closeau, not Dracula.

Yes, it did seem a little hoaky, the way it was filmed. However, I did like the idea behind it. Not every exit has to be grand. On the other hand, I believe it was in Dracula A.D. 72 where, in a flashback scene, the count gets impaled on the shattered remnants of a wagon wheel after a high-speed chase with Van Helsing. Very exciting and bloody. I always liked that one.

Nice choice mutleyhyde, that was a good one.
I still had fun watching Satanic Rites, I think maybe instead of saying "worst demise", I should have said easiest.

I'd agree, the '58 version of Dracula's demise is great as well as the impalement on the wagon wheel and I also like the watery/icy grave for the Count in, Dracula-Prince of Darkness.

I always thought the wagon wheel impalement was one of the best things Hammer ever filmed. I'm also rather fond of the lightning bolt in the spleen ending to SCARS OF DRACULA. The worst is probably the Hawthorne bush. Its not a Dracula demise but I've always hated the "showered to death" demise of Johnny Alucard in AD 1972. But I have worked with a few people for whom a shower would be apparently fatal!

Rock, I always have fun listening to the commentary track during the ice breaker demise in Prince, it really was a little bit of a circus act with that trap door ice
, but still one of my favorites. Not the Count, but another vampire favorite that caught me completely off guard was Cushing decapitating the evil twin in Twins of Evil, very shocking. Cushing was really a bad dude in that one.

I wasn't particularly fond of the ice-breaker death scene in PRINCE...the ice broke way too easily and Lee looked like he was trying out a few disco moves before taking the plunge...still a good movie, though.

Hellion... thank you, thank you, thank you! One of these days, I've got to get that issue of Playboy (Oct. 67-68?)! I do have the Playboy puzzle featuring the twins, the one where they are standing shoulder to shoulder by the bed. I actually got it off of eBay for only 15 bucks. I've seen the magazine go for pretty cheap too. Who says there are no bargains on eBay anymore? Okay, I have to go download those pics now, later.

Is it just me or do I think "Taste the Blood of Dracula" had a really bad ending.
I have not seen it in a while, but from what I remember Dracula was in an old church with the young couple. And then all of a sudden Dracula realizes he in a Church and just dies like that. Usually the main character(s) have a part in Dracula's demise, but in this one they do nothing. That's probably the main problem I have with the ending. Even with the bad ending in "Satanic Rites of Dracula" at least Cushing tricks Dracula into the bush. |
