region free player help

Hi all, I have avoided other region DVDs for a long time now, I usually have no trouble waiting for region 1. But, I had to pick up a disc that will never be released in the US, or on any NTSC system. If ya wanna know, it's the latest DVD from the killer Finnish Goth-Rock band "69 Eyes". Anyway, I need a cheap player to view this on my Toshiba 51H83. Since this might very well be the only PAL DVD I'll ever own, I do not wanna pay too much, but watch this disc I must. So horror freaks, what's the one to get?

MAKE SURE YOU GO TO NERD-OUT.COM FOR THE LATEST INFO. THE CHEAPEST APPROACH IS TO PICK ONE THAT CAN BE MODDED TO BE REGION FREE WITH AN EASY CODE YOU PUT IN OFF THE REMOTR. i AM VERY HAPPY WITH MY CLASSIC DVDPLAYER-i BELIEVE THE MODEL IS 101....oops sorry i just realized i hads capslock on and dont feel like re-typing that. Anyway the classic maintains proper 16x9 aspect ratio when convrting Pal which is something not all of them will do. It ran me around $60.

CyberHome players are also cheap and most do proper PAL conversion. Check out their website at cyberhome.com, then check the hack section at www.dvdrhelp.com to be sure the model you are looking at does proper conversion. I have a 402 that cost me $70, and it works great.

Go to Ebay.com and do a search on the "Daewoo 5800" or Daewoo 5700"

These 2 players are the best I seen for the money. I fucked with both APEX and Cyberhome and those things can be nice units but really have quality control / QA problems.

Mine does it all from Macrovision free, region free and converts both PAL and NTSC for work on your TV. Also the setuo menu has great goodies and not to mention the hidden secret menu ,,, which you can get off of www.nerd-out.com

Good Luck!

Pioneer!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, I just thought I would pass this on. As you know I needed a region free player for my one little region 0 PAL DVD in my collection. I also needed a new "main" player with progressive scan. I took a look at all the models being sold at my local Futureshop, and wrote down the model #s, then went to www.dvdrhelp.com to look for hacks. It turns out that the Pioneer DV563AS will play many PAL DVDs on NTSC TVs right out of the box! So, I bought one, took it home, and aside from being a great machine, it played my PAL DVD just great on my wide screen NTSC TV!!

It is kind of region free, it plays Region 0 PAL, and Region 2 PAL that I know of. Other PAL might be a prob, but I do not know.

It was $299.00 Canadain, which is about $220.00 US.

Well Region 0 ... mean region-less . So it is region free in that case. If can play PAL dvds on NTSC format then yes again it will play dvds in pal format from any region the dvd movie came from.

I have my daewoo dvd player on Region 0 and it plays all region DvD that are in PAL or NTSC and will be able to watch on my NTSC TV.

Looks like BB has a great sale on the Pioneer dvd player, 169.00 free shipping (not bad).

Seems like in Canada everything is more expensive

Daewoo 5800

I've had mine for over a year and it rules. Anytime it is unplugged you have to reset the region, but it's just a series of buttons on the remote that takes about 3 seconds to do.

I think I paid $90 for mine. WEEELLLL worth it. I then went to amazon.co.uk and bought a bunch of movies that weren't available in the states.

Re. cheap players: Been there, done that. Don't go that route. They suck in one way or the other. Most will stretch the image because they can't properly convert 16x9 PAL. Even if you don't have a 16x9 TV, it is still supposed to downconvert it to 4x3 NTSC. Most of them don't do that properly. Some of the cheapies do, but they'll suck in some other way, like having MPEG artifacts or something.

Spend a few hundred and get a nice JVC that will do it properly. Something like this - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=50600

A person whom keen on dvds and can't live without getting , should go with region free players and multisystem tvs ... Many releases still missing in region 1 (Especially European Art House Cinema and some rare Italian Spain and German horror titles)

With so many great DVDs coming out only in PAL, not to mention better versions in PAL of movies also available in NTSC, I just don't see how anyone who loves movies (not just horror) can get by without a code free DVD player. They've gone down so much in price that there's just no excuse anymore. Heck, skip on DVD purchases for a while and save up if you have to. It's definitely worth it.
