Evil Dead Game (and other Horror Games)

What is everyone here's opinion of some of the horror games available in the last 5 years? The Resident Evil Series, Silent Hill, and there are others. lthough I didn;t much enjoy the puzzle solving crap in Resident Evil 2, the zombies rocked.

But, game play wise, as a horror fan, there are some things I'd REALLY like to change in the horror games:
1 - If there is a locked door in front of you, and you are armed with a shotgun, YOU DON'T NEED A FUCKING KEY
2 - Zombies are cool. You are better off putting a room full of 50x 3 hit zombies than a 150 hit boss. Hell, even walking into a room with 5 or so Zombies in RE2 made me panic. The boss was just a nuisance.
3 - Put beer and liquor in the game, and have realistic effects if you drink too much. I really like in Redneck Rampage how if you drink too much alcohol, it makes you feel better, but you can't walk straight, can't shoot straight, and your vision blurrs. And hell, them short time dead zombie chicks may start lookin' kinda purty...
4 - Ammo. If you are going to put zombies in my way, make sure I have enough ammo to shoot them all. Dodgin' Zombies is a past-time for ballet dancers and mamma's boys. RE2 was pretty frustrating at the start, when the bulk of the zombies were there, you didn't have enough ammo.
5 - If you are going to come up with a story line, look to horror stories with good stories. The Resident Evil stories were lame, I thought. Silent Hill was better though.
6 - Secret mini games and weapons. Having to play a game through 3 times really really fast to get a mini gun is a form of torture. I'm sure we could lodge a class action against the game manufacturers about this... I am still pissed about that, and pissed about not being able to get the chainsaw in Silent Hill.

And speaking of Horror Games, I bought Evil Dead PC game friday. I chose it over the PSX version as the graphics looked slightly better. Was really looking forward to playing it.

Well, it didn't happen. Let me just say that I am so sick of PC games. I have now learnt my lesson, and will never buy another. I'll stick to consoles. I wish those monkeys making the games would either test them better, or list the actual hardware they have tested on. I have pretty standard hardware, and the latest directx. I am so sick of games that I can't even run, or having to spend 5 hours trying to get them working. It is way to much work. It sucks. And they just blame the hardware. As a software developer myself, I find it pretty obnoxious the crap the foist on us. Hell, you can't even get error logs from these things, to try figure out why the fuck it doesn't want to cooperate, it just locks up. Had the same problem with Resident Evil Nemesis, but with Nemesis, I perservered and found what setting actually worked. Of course, with Evil Dead, there are no set up options. And it doesn't work.

I really dig those old-school PC horror-games like Harvester and Phantasmagoria. You know where you walked two screens, cue FMV-segment, walked two screens, solved a puzzle, cue FMV-segment, walked two screens and so on. Aah, the mindless fun of it. But frankly, Phantasmagoria managed to give me a few scares, until it broke down on my PC and I couldn't get any further. Same thing happened with Harvester on an another computer so I definitely agree with you on those PC-incompability issues dude.

I'm a huge fan of the Resident Evil series (on PSX, of course) and I am eagerly anticipating the movie coming out next year!

In case you weren't aware, it's being directed by Paul (Event Horizon) Anderson and will star Milla (The Fifth Element)Jovovich and Michelle (Girlfight) Rodriguez.

Cool!

I'm too am a fan of the Resident Evil-series, mainly the Code Veronica-one on Dreamcast though. But, ugh, the movie-adaption sounds terrible. Perhaps that's just me being annoyed and disappointed that the produceras decided to boot Romero from the project. Man, what a zombie-feast that would have been.

I played RE2 a few times back before I was really into horror, mostly to find out what all the fuss was about. It was ok, kind of got boring after a while though.

I have Hail to the King on PlayStation and the game bores me to shit. Stupid as hell.

I STILL have to get Resident Evil: Code Veronica for DC... I think I've been holding off on getting it because I have yet to complete 1 or 2... I got 1 for PC, and to play games on PC I usually have to go out of my way to play them... When I'm on my computer, I usually want to do things that a computer does like go online, chat, edit my movies, etc.... and playin games I just don't usually do, whereas I play consoles a lot because I can do that and still be online at the same time on my computer... I think I may just have a problem/addiction though Anyway, that is the reason I never played the first one much (i didn't have a PSX at the time), and the 2nd one a friend of mine borrowed for the longest time, I finally got it back and I look forward to playing again. Once I complete those, I should definitely be getting 3 and CV for DC. I do have a game called Carrier for DC that is similar to Resident Evil, but has a more Sci-Fi feel to it, but still some horror elements. It's not great, but not bad for the $20 pricetag I got it for.

May have to dig up a dreamcast for Code Veronica... Should be able to get one really cheap I guess

I'm looking forward to some good horror games getting released for the PS2 - something more powerful, but foolproof (unlike these FUCKING PC games)

I remember seeing pictures and reading about Carrier right before it was released in the US. It was the first horror-title for DC and it looked really good making me looking forward to it all the more. Then of course it never got released in Sweden, so I couldn't rightly satisfy my horror on DVD-needs while waiting for RE:CV. Man, what a bummer but RE did eventually get released and it was worth the wait.

Blood was a pretty cool game, but it is 4 years old by now. Halflife is very cool, even if it is getting old too.

The really cool thing about these games: They came with level editors.

Evil Dead game

Jeez... I'm, what? Post #9? And the first one to talk about the title subject?

Well, as far as the Evil Dead game: I got a kick out of it. It was a little hard to get started, but once you made some progress, it became super easy. Rent it; don't buy it... 'Cause you can beat it by the time you have to return it.
The controls are good... A slightly actioned up Resident Evil, but still not up to, say, Tomb Raider or Legacy of Kain (the Soul Reaver entries, of course).
Atmosphere/ story-wise, it started out cool... The attention paid to being accurate with the cabin and its immediate lay-out was great to see, and it was cool that disc 2 took you back into the medieval times, a la Army of Darkness. But, all in all, the game was too silly (i.e. zombie boy-scouts), and not genuinely funny enough... But what could you expect? A script up to what Raimi would've done? Oh well. The TV commercial made the whole project worthwhile, anyway.
I had much fun playing all the way through it.

I love the Resident Evil series. (Faults and all.) It paved the way for survival horror. The movie adaptation sounds awful. (What's up with this super computer nonsense?)
Resident Evil: Director's Cut, Resident Evil 2, and Code: Veronica are my favorites from the series. RE: Nemesis was decent, but very annoying. I hated that f*cking mutant with a passion! (Stars...Stars...Stars...) I wont even go into RE: Gun Survivor. (UGH!)
Anyone collect the books or have the cancelled WS comic series?

Silent Hill had great atmosphere and chilling visuals. Your character, Harry is a Joe six-pack, not some gung ho commando with excellent aim. The radio was a nice element in the game. There's nothing lke walking down a foggy street and your radio picks up the presence of a nearby spook. Hell, who can forget the little bastards with the knives! A sequel is being made for the PS2. (Can't wait!)

Carrier was OK. It was more enjoyable than it ought to be. The googles were nice to have. (And a life saver!)

Castlevania: SOTN was a perfect game, IMO. (Same with Soul Reaver.) N64's Castlevania games were pathetic. (Just because it's in 3-D, doesn't make it good.)

The Evil Dead game was tolerable. The respawning enemies were a pain in the ass and the gameplay was creaky. Still, it had some good moments and terrific Campbell quotes. I'm happy to own it for collecting purposes.

Countdown Vampires made a nice coaster.

Anyone remember the charming Zombies Ate My Neighbors?
Or the JAWS, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street games for the Nintendo?

I remember all those games, and still play them to this day (except Nightmare, I've never played it) thanks to the wonder known as emulation. I also have the PC version of the Nightmare game, but I don't remember if it's the same as the NES version. There were some Aliens games made too (including the cool ALiens vs. Predator)

Just an update. I took my ED game back to the store, and got into a shit fight. They tried installing it on a machine there, and got further than I did, but it still fucked up. They still wouldn't give me a refund. I said, you got to be kidding, it doesn't work properly on that machine either. My machine meets the specs advertised on the box, I followed all instructions, including troubleshooting tips, but still no luck, so what more do you want. They were wanting to try installing it on a better machine, to see if it would work on that. I said what the hell would that prove. I told them I'd bring my PC down from Brisbane next week to prove it didn't work (I work interstate) on mine, as that was the only way they'd be satisfied that it didn't work. They finally agreed to just give me a refund (it was closing time) but all the registers were closed so I have to go back tomorrow.

So I have learnt my lesson - I will never buy a PC game ever again, unless I take my PC to the store to try it out. FUCK PC games.

Shit, just watching our local Multicultural channel and they are advertising some cool looking Korean psychological horror "Whispering Corridors". Damn, SBS is cool. The amount of euro and asian horror that they have shown... One thing I don't mind my tax going towards...

I can't get into the Evil Dead game. I got it for the PC, and just can't get used to the controls.

I play most of my games on the Playstation. I loved the Resident Evil series, and Silent Hill was cool as well.

Just got the demo for the new Alone in the Dark game. the graphics are excellent, but not sure about the gameplay (for the PC.)

I, too, am a die-hard fan of the RE series (on PSX/2) and I can't wait for Code Veronica and whatever else is coming. (Even though I haven't finished three yet.)

That dog-through-the-window bit still scares the crap out of me, even though I know it's coming.

I have the books, and most of the comics - I missed the 5th one that went out short-printed or something when WS canceled it. Don't want to pay a fortune on eBay for it. There was another series ("Blood and Ice"? "Fire and Ice"?) that WS started, but I didn't get it. New characters and stuff - I didn't like the RE book that wasn't based on a game, so I skipped 'em.

And yeah, Survivor was the HackMaster version of Resident Evil, wasn't it?
