Highwaymen

Seeing how Robert Harmon is responsible for my third favorite film of all time (The Hitcher), I have been dying to see this film for a good while now. Its fantastic to see him returning to the road horror film after all these years, and the film's premise sounds wonderful. Its a shame that its getting a very limited release, but I am so happy that it is hitting Texas. Really lucky break for me, especially considering this is one of my more anticipated genre films in a good while. Can't wait to check it out Friday. The poster looks fantastic, and hopefully New Line won't change it for the DVD.

You know, I saw a trailer for this flick in the theater.
It looked kind of interesting....
didn't knock my socks off, but interesting to me nonetheless.
It was played before either
Willard
Wrong Turn
Cabin Fever
Freddy vs Jason
I can't remember due to all the forties!
heh heh...
shame its not getting wide theatrical release though
I'll definitely check out the video.
From what my addled mind can recall...
Some sort of accident, with a car(driver) involved haunting(: trying to kill)
our good man Caviezel.
Looked pretty cool to me

I think I remember seeing the trailer on the Final Destination 2 DVD...and yeah it looks interesting. I probably won't be able to see it in the theater but a decent DVD release should spark up my interest again later down the road.

I saw it last night. The film opens with a really cool and well done scene of sadistic violence, so the film grabs you from the get-go, and its a great precursor to the events to come. Cavaziel delivers a restrained, subtle performance, and I have to say it works well in the confines of this film. The lovely Mitra is fine, though she has some bad lines in one particular scene, but that's not her fault at all. Colm Feore is good as Fargo, though he's at his best when we're relegated to just hearing his creepy taunts over the CB radio. Frankie Faison is good as the traffic investigator, and the comedy that his character brings to the table actually works, especially at the very end of the film.

The film's score is fantastic, and very moody. I loved it. There are also some wonderful scenes of vehicle carnage, and the cinematography is quite good.

There are a few problems with the film, the main one being the short runtime. I thoroughly enjoyed the film, and it should have been longer. Also, the shortness made for a lack of character development. I would've liked to have had more time with Feore developing his sadistic character especially. There is also some bad dialogue as I already mentioned, but thankfully, its just a bit. Only other problems were one sort of unrealistic scene, and one scene where a character did something pretty stupid.

Still, I got much enjoyment out of this film, and would definitely recommend it. As I said, it has a few flaws, but the film is still a great time despite them. While not on par with the masterful The Hitcher, this is a solid if slightly flawed effort. I'll be getting the DVD.

After taking forever, New Line has finally anounced this film for DVD release. Here are the specs from Fango's site:

New Line Home Video has announced that HIGHWAYMEN, which played selected theatrical dates in the Southwest earlier this year, will bypass any further big-screen exposure and arrive on video August 24. Robert (THE HITCHER) Harmon directed this asphalt-bound chiller in which Rennie Cray (THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST's Jim Caviezel) seeks revenge for his wife's murder by James Fargo (Colm Feore, currently on screen in THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK), who has bio-mechanically integrated himself into his '72 Cadillac to create the ultimate death machine. Rhona Mitra and Frankie Faison co-star; sadly, the DVD, which will present the movie in 2.35:1 widescreen with DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, will be bereft of extras save the trailer.

I'm quite disappointed with this. New Line really treated this film terribly, and the DVD doesn't seem to be much better. I'm almost certain some scenes were cut from this film, and it would be nice to see them, or any extras at all for that matter. The trailer is really worthless, as almost every other New Line DVD I've bought within the last year has the film's trailer on it. I'll be picking this up, but New Line should've given this film a shot.

Harmon seems to be getting the shaft lately with his theatrical flicks. He was denied final cut for They and judging by your review I'd say the same happened with Highwaymen.

I'll see this when it hits DVD, or maybe sooner if someone rips a DVD screener. Either way, the man knows how to set up beautiful shots and I don't think anyone can say otherwise regardless of how they feel about his work.

Well here's a look at the cover artwork. Not too bad. Sure it has his big head, but at least it's not hovering in the darkness like so many others.

The poster is very cool, and this cover can't compare in the slightest. Damn, I'm really annoyed with New Line on this film's whole fiasco.

1.its only 81 minutes
2.newline unlike most of their dvd releases seem like they disowned this movie with virtually no extras on dvd

I've been waiting forever for this film. Tomorrow it will arrive in the mail! Anyway, the DVD cover is quite shitty. I have the original poster as a screensaver, and I'm planning on ordering a copy of it. Great poster.
