Different releases of Manhunter
I have the limited edition of Manhunter released by Anchor Bay. It has the theatrical and director's cut on it, and I noticed that there are separate theatrical and director's cut releases, also from Anchor Bay.
Does anyone know if there are any differences between the separate releases and the one I already have in the limited edition? |

I think the Divimax director's cut is a brand new disc...other than that the two disc set (much like Army of Darkness) has the same material as prevous Anchor Bay releases.

Yep. The theatrical version is the exact same thing.
The solo DC is a beefed up version with commentary and a few other extras. It's also supposed to be re-mastered to not look like dogshit ike the version in the LE does. I only have the LE, and will not double-dip on this title that I don't like all that much anyway. If you're a huge fan, the new DC might be the one for you. |

I was at Worst Buy a week ago & they had several copies of Manhunter for a very cheap $5.99! I believe it was the Theatrical single disc cut! Not a bad price. Given I've never seen the movie to begin with, I have no idea which might be best to see 1st.

I don't think the Divimax version comes with the theatrical cut and another company is releasing Manhunter on DVD this time in a boxset along with the rest of the Lecter series.

I have owned 3 DVD versions of Manhunter. The 2-disc limited edition, the Divimax reissue, and I also bought the old theatrical single disc DVD that I found at Wal-Mart for $5.50 recently.
The 2 disc you can simply avoid. The extended cut has the quality of a bad VHS tape. The only thing really nice about it was the very cool miniature "manilla folder" which contained some photos and liner sheets that looked like typed pages. The Divimax reissue is better quality, includes commentary, but does not have 5.1 sound and is lacking the 30+ minute featurette on the theatrical and 2-disc limited edition. It does include a NEW Director's Cut, and not the theatrical version. It is slightly different scene-wise from the extended cut on the 2-disc limited editon version

Divimax director's cut has less blood splattering in the scene where
Michael Mann also mentions this in his commentary. Hard to understand the reason behind this. Did the producer want more gore than mr.Mann? |

Manhunter is one of the most overrated films ever, IMO. I don't know why AB feels the need to release so many versions of it.

I almost picked it up at Best Buy for $5.99, but wanted to ask Wiz first. I know there is like 100 releases of this movie, so I wasn't sure if he wanted to hold out for the best version. I think I will probably just buy it next time.

![]() I truly think it's a very weak film. It's slow, and in my opinion not well directed at all. Some scenes were suspenseful, but not enough to sustain interest during the entire running time. It just felt like a cheap TV-movie. The acting's OK, but Brian Cox is no Anthony Hopkins. I guess I was expecting much more than I got in this case, because I had heard so many great things about it. I was quite disappointed.

Brian Cox was a far more menacing and better Lecktor than Anthony Hopkins. Cox seems brilliant, evil and like he could physically rip you apart. Hopkins is an endearing old man.
