Dr. Giggles on AMC?

OK, Posting this in the "Classic" forum may be poor taste, but I don't know where else it belongs. AMC (American Movie Classics) used to have good movies, occasional horror, and no commercials. Now it has poor movies, occasional horror, and commercials. Nothing more clearly shows the decay of our society leading up to the apocolypse than this:

AMC is showing Dr. Giggles tonight at 10:00.

Now, I will gladly debate what makes a classic with anybody. I say certain years with few exceptions. And Dr. Giggles ain't one. Nothing against gore flicks, or slasher flicks, or even doctors.

OK, rant off, just struck me as more sad than ironic.

I actually finished watching this, well at least the last 20 minutes anyway and I for one will not call it a classic. A movie with Peter Cushing called And Now the Screaming Starts is about to come on. I don't know if it's a classic either but at least it has a classic horror actor in it. The same people who consider Dr. Giggles a classic also thought The remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre was just as good or better than the original.

Nearly everything they show on AMC nowadays would not be called a classic, at least by real movie buffs. Dr. Giggles was entertaining, but certainly not a film I would watch more than once... it doesn't really even deserve to be on a channel called American Movie Classics. I prefer TCM now, even if they don't show enough horror, just because they have kept up the tradition of not having commercials interrupt their movies and most of the time show the films in their proper aspect ratio... something AMC always fails to do.

This is nothing new. AMC has been like this for at least 2 years now. They have sucked for a while, and I don't watch them at all.

Well what other horror movies could be considered American classics? You can only watch Jaws and The Exorcist so many times...

They showed Halloween 2, 4, and 5 all the time too. I agree that the original is a classic, but the sequels...probably not. Is Motel Hell a classic? Probably, maybe. They showed Amityville 3. Classic? I think not. I guess they figure if a classic movie has sequels, those are fair game.

i watch AMC A LOT more now than i used to. i watch it more than HBO and SCI-FI and most channels. i love the new format. no, theyre not classics, but i watched about one of those previously so-called classics about once a week. AMC now has a few things worth watching everyday. not "classics" but fun or entertaining movies.

this week on AMC- Car Wash, Elephant Man, Rocky, The Natural, Flying Leathernecks, Lifeboat, They Live, Invaders From Mars, It Came From Beneath The Sea, Rocky 2 and 3, Breakfast Club, Fletch Lives, Lucas, Breaking Away, Mask, etc.

certainly better than HBO which is mostly now way overhyped TV shows with a few movies scattered thruout, and SCI-FI channel which pretty much sucks most of the time.

I think they call themselves "The American Movie CHANNEL" now, so they technically don't have to show just classics.

The debate on what is, and what is not, a classic is a sticky at the top of this forum. I've never posted in that thread because it would take too many brain cycles to figure it out. However, age has a lot to do with it, and for me this film doesn't qualify as a classic in terms of this forum. However, if Mutleyhyde hasn't moved it, he must think it does

I think "clasicc" in terms of this forum has nothing to do with the quality, par se, of a movie, and more to do with the age and it's generally assumed standard. Dr. Giggles has some fans, but I seriously doubt in a poll of most horror fans, this one would rate as a "classic" int he same catagory as, say, the Universal monster series, or the Hammer films. Still, you want to debate it - go to the sticky

Obviously, it's up to the moderator of the forum, but I think the fact that the thread has resulted in a discussion of the content of a specific TV network that allegedly shows classic movies makes this thread A. Appropriate to the Classics forum, and B. Different enough from the sticky to justify a second thread.

Actually, the appearance of Dr. Giggles on AMC just struck me as odd. It was an attempt at satire, which apparently fell flat.

Classic movies as a whole, and horror specifically, seem to be underappreciated by 'the average consumer'. So, a person such as myself, who enjoys old silent films as well as film noir, must be a film connoisseur. Or just weird. Whatever. I am OK with either label.

I don't so much mind AMC's movie selection, it just seems ironic given their background with Classic movies. I also don't like the edited and censored format, nor the commercial breaks. But, since they didn't ask me before changing...

I'll stay with TCM, and Silent Sunday Nights...

Tawny, you have the right idea. And Motel Hell is certainly a classic.

Not so perfect... to the doghouse with ya, Wolfie!

Moderator's note; moving thread to General, because this movie isn't old, and it's crrrrrap!
