He's too good of a person to say it directly, but Matt IS smarter than you. WAAYYYYY smarter. He knows it, I know it, and judging from your heightened inferiority complex, even YOU know it. And it doesn't have anything to do with the classes he takes, either.

[quote=DVD-fanatic-9;579622]Matt, you're right that I don't listen - when I've heard it all before. What do you think there is to be gained for you to point out the Stupid-Guide-to the obvious, neglecting a lot of points? At least I pay enough attention to know when something is overrated. And when a point of view has been expressed TO DEATH!

Everyone knows I can't make a dent in John Carpenter's precious The Thing. So, don't make it out like I'm some evil terrorist, destroying the reputation of one of the most overrated, allegedly-important and definitive cinematic misfires of all-time. The Thing gets more credit than it deserves. Deadly Friend couldn't get any less. So already, at least there's a reason I'm defending it. But you - on the other hand - talk about someone who can't handle dissenting points of view. You look like you're about to expload (and admittedly, you're not the only one) because someone will passionately defend Deadly Friend.

The guy's making fucking millions off shitty action movies. And like I said before, you think calling him a "generic" filmmaker is a criticism? Not to mention now you go off DEFENDING him, explaining - you make it sound like you respect him more than horror filmmakers just because he has to make films on a bigger budget.
No I'm not going after Michael Bay because I don't think there's reason to. Yes he makes miillions upon millions because people flock to that sort of shit. A vast majority of filmgoers like CRAP, which is why these movies make hundreds of millions of dollars.Yes, calling him a "generic" filmmaker IS a criticism! Jesus Christ. ANYTHING you say about a movie is criticism. ANYTHING. Whether it be positive, negative, constructive, it's ALL criticism. I'm NOT DEFENDING HIM. Oh my God, I said that his action sequences are very-well directed, but THAT'S it. He's not a good director.

Okay, I defended Milk. Mainstream? Nope. It got nominated for an Oscar sure, but it was a sleeper at the boxoffice. But where do I do this? Defend mainstream films all the time? I'm a fan of classical Hollywood/European 1960s arthouse films...Arthouse CERTAINLY isn't mainstream. That's just my area of study. And if you'd watch any non-genre films, you'd see that other genres say much much more than horror. Sure there are periods of horror where it had a lot to say, there's no argument there. But a vast majority of horror films are hollow and barren and have nothing TO them. Hell, maybe you SHOULD take a course in film study. You'd see there are other genres out there that had much to say and in different ways than the horror genre. I used to think the same way you did (but not NEARLY to such an extremist degree) but when I started studying film at a higher level, your perspective changes on a lot of films, and you see different ways of critcizing and analyzing them. A more accurate way of judging films, anyway. I have a pretty good idea what criticism is, you're the one who seems to be confused.

No you're not. You've taken it much further than just talking about movies. But what maybrick was saying was that for some reason you take everything so goddamn personally (even before people single you out). You have such a Nazi/extremist view that you go all up in arms about everything. It's ridiculous.

I don't know if they make me SMARTER, but I sure know more than you, that's for sure. There's no way, after I've read and studied thousands upon thousands of pages of readings on film historians, theorists, critics, etc that an average movie buff would know more than a university student who is SPECIALIZING in that area. And I may know more than a lot of people on here, and many more know more than me. I correct people because I think people should know the correct information, or a more accurate way of looking at something (such as the whole rape/revenge issue - it's rooted in genre study). Just as if I'm wrong, I'd expect someone to correct me, which people have. So you have two options: 1. You can bite your lip, accept the fact that you're wrong and learn something new. Or, 2. You can go on knowing the wrong information and further make a fool of yourself.

I hope that people can learn something from me, because I've learned a lot from other people on here. (Just returning the favor).
