Picnic At Hanging Rock (1975)

Haven't seen Picnic At Hanging Rock in ages so I gave this a spin the other day - great film, love every minute of it.

Anyone else like this movie?

I always thought this was based on a true incident so I did a little research today only to find out that some say it's fiction ... while others say it's not.
Seems like no one knows for sure though
Any theory what happened to those girls and teacher?

It is a very good film. Haunting is probably the best word to describe it.

I was lucky enough to see this for the first time in a cinema last year and I fell completely in love with it. It's being shown here again in a few weeks and I'm definately going again, even though I own the DVD!

An amazing film with a very intriguing mystery at its core. Gorgeous Australian settings too, even mystical looking at times. As for the fact or fiction question, I too thought it was fiction for many years. Then I heard that it is based on a fictional novel by Joan Lindsay. Either way, fact or fiction, its an excellent, thought provoking piece of work.

Hey Hellbilly,

Depending on if your DVD player can handle the PAL format or not, a wonderful special edition of PAHR has just been released here in Australia with a 2 hour documentary that goes into detail on the issue of is it fact or fiction. It also shows footage of the alternate ending plus interviews with many of the cast and crew.

There is also an onset doco, an interview with the author plus a modern day tour of the two main locations used in the film, it doesn't have a commentary though which is disappointing but it's a wonderful DVD. The link for it is below, hope your DVD player can handle PAL and you can enjoy this DVD

The movie is sublime. I screened it for my dad a few weeks ago, and it didn't seem to make much of an impression on him, but then he called me later after he got home and told me how it had germinated and really got under his skin after he left. I can understand the reaction, and I do believe that it's probably a common one. It's a beautifully filmed movie, and is a slow burn that just digs in and stays with you.

i love the film, gorgeous. i really want to buy the aussie DVD for the documentary. there are some great theories i read online and would love to see them further explained. i know its only a movie but one theory makes complete sense except for when the fat girl says she saw the teacher running towards the rocks in her underwear.

the ending that was added to the novel, after the death of the author, evidently because the publishers wanted it to remain a mystery but it was put into the contract that it would be released upon the authors death, is totally whacked out, worth a read but its very unsatisfying.

Just watched the Australian Blu-Ray of this tonight. It's maybe the 5th time I've seen it. The picture was beautiful and a major step up from the letterbox Criterion. As for the film, this is quickly becoming one of my favorite films and easily my favorite mystery. It's just so surreal and haunting. It's deliberately yet perfectly paced where it feels like your strolling though a dream. It's hard to explain why it fits within the horror genre as there aren't many horror element yet it just does. It's simply a classic film.

Yeah, this is indeed an oddly enticing flick. Not much really happens, but the atmosphere and storyline keeps you intrigued. I'd be all over an American Blu.

A totally gorgeous movie to look at...and one that really stays with you. I don't watch it alot, but am now getting tempted to give it a spin.

I love the film too, and hopefully someone will release the original Theatrical cut on Blu-ray. Thus far the import Blu-rays are of the Director's Cut which excises 7-8 minutes from the film. It's still a great film in either cut, but I prefer the original version.
