Adam Wingard's The Guest

I'm going to be blatantly honest when I saw that Adam Wingard has yet to impress me. His directorial efforts so far have ranged from mediocre to terrible. But his latest feature, the Guest, is shaping up to be pretty good, and has been getting a lot of really positive buzz around the indie film festivals. Now I am still preceding with caution going into this one because his last film, You're Next, had a lot of hype behind it and I was not much of a fan, but I am willing to give this one a shot. Here is the breakdown:

Official Trailer

Synopsis
Quote:
A young soldier arrives on the doorstep of the Peterson family, claiming to be a good friend of their beloved son who died in action. The Petersons welcome David into their home and into their lives, but when people start mysteriously dying in town, mayhem ensues as their teenage daughter, Anna, starts wondering if David is responsible.

This is supposed to be getting a wide release on the 17th, but I'm not really seeing much promotion for it outside of the horror websites. Same goes for Tusk.

Saw this today and thought it was a fun take on Shadow of a Doubt. Entertaining throughout with some cool nods to horror fans even if the film itself maybe falls on the fringes of the genre. Good score and interesting characters. Check it out.

I didnīt know anything about this movie, until last night, when a friend recommended it to me, and I gave it a watch.
It was a pleasant surprise
The mix between action, thriller and horror really worked.
And especially the final 20 minutes had a superb 80:s vibe to it, when it comes to the music and lightning. Plus the girl in the lead looks like she fell out of a timewarp from 1987

I need to rewatch "Youīre Next", but I think "The Guest" might beat it

I saw this the other night knowing nothing about it. It was a pretty good movie with a good cast, decent story and a weird mix of genres that worked well for it. I really loved the disco scene at the end. That soundtrack was pretty awesome.

Thing's kinda got a point tho.

The Guest started off fairly strong I thought. It sort of had this poor-man's Drive vibe going on. It kept my interest and I wanted to find out who this guy was. But once the MP was brought in, the film took a 180 degree shift in tone. Some comedic moments felt out of place and the reveal seemed just rather corny. I honestly thought they were going to say David was going to be a cyborg....his identity isn't as far-fetched as that, but it still didn't seem to fit the tone of the movie.

I didn't think The Guest was anything exceptional. I mean its definitely worth a watch, but I doubt I'd ever want to sit down to watch it again. Good tunes, some nice cinematography, titties, and a nod to Halloween 3...yeah, definitely worth a watch.
