Maybe not so much a remake?

Recently, original Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell went a lot farther, saying at a post-screening Q&A that plans for sequels to both this new Evil Dead series and Raimi’s own movies might eventually merge the two storylines. We couldn’t confirm his quote at the time. At today’s WonderCon panel for the remake, director Fede Alvarez confirmed the ambition to top off his own Evil Dead 2 and Sam Raimi’s Army of Darkness 2 with a film that brings the storylines together.

We know that Fede Alvarez is already starting work on an original sequel to his Evil Dead, and we’ve also been told that Sam Raimi is potentially getting to work on Army of Darkness 2. That would be a direct sequel to his last film featuring Campbell’s character Ash, which came out in 1993.

Today at WonderCon, Campbell and Alvarez both talked about the potential sequels to their respective storylines, with Alvarez saying that his ultimate dream would be to make a seventh film that united the Ash narrative from Sam Raimi’s movies with Mia’s story from Fede Alvarez’s new chapter. ”I think seven is a nice number,” said Campbell.

This is all contingent, of course, on the performance of this remake — if this one doesn’t do well, then both Alvarez’s Evil Dead 2 and Raimi’s Army of Darkness 2 might not happen. If it does well enough, we might see more Evil Dead movies than anyone ever expected.

Even though it’s been more than 20 years since audiences last encountered Ash, Campbell said it was “mandatory” that the character not be in the remake.

“We didn’t want to dilute the character, and I didn’t want have Ash have a little cameo, either, because it could cut down the meaning of things,” Campbell said. “Plus, Sam’s the only one who should direct that character.”

Agreed.

“If you don’t respect an audience’s intelligence, you’re doomed,” Campbell said. “There are a lot of filmmakers, but I won’t name them, who think audiences are stupid and will get distracted, so they shoot things from every different angle and hyper-cut it. This movie is not over-edited or under-edited. It’s a well-edited movie, and not many movies are. Filmmakers think, ‘Ah, audiences are going to get bored and we have to keep it moving,’ and they can’t let stuff play out.’ The first part of our movie isn’t racing along at any huge pace.”

Since Campbell, Raimi and Tapert have been invested in the material for more than 30 years, Campbell said that the “Evil” trio was very involved in the “Dead” remake.

“Our hands are all over it, from casting to script to editing to sound,” Campbell said.

I'll be seeing this Sat. I wasn't that looking forward to it, but as it gets closer to release date I am getting a little more excited. It will in no way compare to the first film but it looks like it could be an insane gore soaked ride!

The AV Club gave it a B+

Co-writer/director Alvarez, a Uruguayan who first gained notice on YouTube with his striking short “Panic Attack!”, doesn’t seem all that invested in the sibling relationship that’s cynically acts as the film’s emotional core. But he has a clear zeal for bloody mayhem, and the chops to make a hodgepodge of borrowed gestures from The Exorcist and Raimi movies seem bracing again. At a certain point, the characters’ reticence to take action makes no sense: Levy’s addiction is supposed to account for her “crazy” behavior, but Evil Dead often seems like the type of movie that inspired Edgar Wright’s “Don’t” trailer in Grindhouse. But Alvarez just keeps on amplifying the gory intensity until the film becomes absurd and weirdly infectious, an exercise in seeing how far the audience will bend without breaking. Only the flexible need apply.

Is this a limited release? It does not seem to be playing in the Montreal area, which I figure is a pretty big market.

A quick search here shows at least 3 theaters in Montreal will carry it.
