Definitely a favorite remake of mine also. Loved it and the score was simply amazing in a theater. Very powerful.

The "cold turkey" aspect was very clever, and did a good job of keeping them in the cabin. I will bet that it would have been a lot more fun to see in a theater where I could have at least had the benefit of hearing the audience reactions.

But, I felt the characters were distant and hard to get involved with. Acting was mediocre most of the time, with the main male lead being pretty bad. I really thought that they could have used a bit more humor. Not necessarily in a slapstick (Evil Dead 2) sort of way, but just that showing a lighter side of the characters themselves would have gone a long way to getting me to care about them a bit more. I get that the whole situation for them all was heavy from the beginning, but a bit of levity or playfulness in their early interactions would have really helped me care for them as characters. As it is, they all came off as detached fodder for the effects.

The score was terrible. Just terrible. I really think they should have gone with something more avant-garde and aggressive, like they did with the trailer. I can't stress how much this pulled me out of the film other than to just say "terrible" a bunch more times. Terrible terrible terrible...

In the end, I found the whole thing to be fairly unnecessary. They may have improved on the original in terms of effects, but they also lost a lot of the other strengths that the original had going for it. Mainly, they lost a lot of the originality.
This was sort of a condensed version of what I had originally intended to post, except I hated the "cold turkey" subplot and while the SFX were great, they were more suited for a torture porn flick than an Evil Dead flick...no where near the fun to watch, shlocky, slapstick cartoonish yet still frighting effects of the original.

The score was one of the worst things about the film. The choir chants were completely out of place. Although maybe it was fitting since the deadites were mere copy and pastes of Regan MacNeil...from the contacts in their eyes to their spouting of offensive language.

I hated this remake.

The first Evil Dead never had slapstick comedy and this was based on the originals darker roots. The slapstick came with the sequels.

Yeah it did...watch the deadites. It may not have been as intended as the sequels, but Raimi's comedy is very much in the film. From Linda's cartoonish laugh to the way Shelly's limbs still twitch after she's been dismembered.

While mainly being horror orientated, Evil Dead still showcased Raimi's comedic upbringings.

I don't (and will never) call that slapstick, that's just messed up and is what makes the original my favorite. The remake also went for the "messed up" approach.

i wouldn't think so. i saw it in the theater, and the audience reaction consisted solely of laughter.

(i'm being 100% genuine here - i don't remember any gasps or screams or expressions of disgust during any of the gruesome bits...just silence for the first half hour or so, and then a steadily increasing amount of laughs, as people began to realize what they were getting for their money.)

You obviously weren't at my screening.

fair enough. in the interest of full disclosure, it was a half-full matinee screening, so i'm sure that had something to do with it. but that was my experience...

It was pretty much the same for me. The audience had a blast, it was great experience.

that's nice, and perhaps I would have thought more of it in a more receptive environment, but the laughter in my screening was definitely derisive.

I think that the audience experience is largely subjective. If you are enjoying a movie, then you are probably going to translate other people's laughter in a positive light, that they are enjoying the film. That may not necessarily be the case. They may very well be laughing "at" the movie, not "with". Likewise if you hate the movie, you might perceive other's laughter in a condescending tone. You might never know for sure unless you ask them or they're extremely vocal about their delight/displeasure.

Everyone was talking positively about it when we left the theatre so even if they were laughing at the film they still had a good time.
