The Stepfather is a great little suspense thriller with really good performances and very taut direction by Joseph Ruben; far superior to the director's recent mess "The Forgotten".

The first Stepfather movie is good. I'd buy that if it ever hits special edition DVD.
![]() Part 2 is worth a watch but its not "owning" material IMO. Stay away from the 3rd one.

I absolutely love both Stepfather movies. I especially love the sequel since it's so damn cheesy and has that wonderful, haunting music score.
Part 3 is an odd one, and it doesn't include Terry O'Quinn as the Stepfather. He was offered the chance to be in Part 3, and even to direct it...but he declined. I still kinda like the film for some reason...plus it has Priscilla Barnes! I remember clearly that it debuted exclusively on HBO as one of those Friday Night premiere things, and then came to VHS. I also have the German DVD for the first film, it's a nice release. The transfer is quite good in 16X9. There is also a DVD on Region 1 for the first sequel that came out a couple years back. Surprisingly it has deleted scenes, commentary, etc...

didn't dave do a review on the die trilogy german set?
anyway i have a legit r2 full screen version for trade if anyone's interested. i love stepfather. geez all he wants is the perfect family and all he ever gets is grief from snotty kids to far along to learn what real discipline should be. these characters really appeal to me. inside their head, they have this vision of the way things have to be and all the sudden, somebody's fuckin' around and things always start stray away a bit from plan A. a violent bone in stepfather? i don't think so, he's just misunderstood. i think the next versus movie should go the direction of the dentist vs. stepfather and see who's paitents or family dies first.

I think all of the films are good. 1 is very good, 2 is okay, and 3 is good. I thought 3 was actually better than 2, even though 3 didn't have Terry O'Quinn.
Personally I don't know if i'd put the 'own' stamp on any of them. Personally I would love to own them all (I do), but to me they're an acquired taste. The people that love them, LOVE them, but the people that don't, REALLY DON'T. jmo |

The first STEPFATHER is a great little thriller with a terrific performance by Terry O'Quinn. The sequel, though unnecessary,is a pretty entertaing formula sequel,it gets a boost from underrated genre actress Meg Foster.Part 3 is pretty forgettable.

I have the scandinavian release of part one , I think it is open matt, and has a 5:1 soundtrack. I am very happy with both the picture and audio. If a special edition of this as ever released I would have no problem double dipping

I have them both on VHS as well. Got them very cheap!! I watched the first one and it's okay. Nothing spectacular, but I haven't put the second one in the player yet.
