I somehow missed this 6-page thread. I went with Carrie. As much as I love some of the others I have a harder time getting through them as easily.

My choice was Dawn of the Dead when this poll was posted some years ago, but one's taste can change over a couple of years. Although I still hold Dawn in high regard as one of the best horror films ever, Jaws is certainly a juggernaut of a film. It is impeccably made and tense as all hell during the right moments. It also has infinite replay value and was a pioneer of the "summer blockbuster" films. It may have gotten my vote today.
I gotta add that I love Devo1313's vote for Horror High (Twisted Brain). A late night TV teenage favorite of mine and I'm super happy that Code Red finally gave it a proper release on DVD. A flawed film for sure, but it is a fun twist on the Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde story. Gotta love the opening theme too!

I'm really fond of almost every film on this list--and quite a few of the suggested "other" titles. But for me it comes down to Halloween or Dawn of the Dead--in my opinion the two greatest horror films of all-time. I'm going with Halloween.
70s cinema in general is hard to top. But in terms of horror I think it's easy to argue that it's the absolute peak of the genre. In my estimation more legitimately great horror films came out in the 70s than all the succeeding decades combined. |

I went with Suspiria because it's a personal favorite, but I don't necessary think it's the "best". Though I don't consider "Jaws" to be a horror film as much as an adventure/thriller, but I'd go with that one as being among the best.

I went with Jaws cause I have a soft spot for it. I just wish Universal would put out in Blu.
