I'd give LA the nod for the better ending, too, one of my favorites from any genre. Welcome to the human race.
This explains it better then I ever could. I hated it at first as well, the CGI was bad even then, but having watched it recently it is just a lot of fun. It's almost like what Evil Dead 2 is to Evil Dead, pretty much a remake with more comic tones.

Surf 2 might be one of my favorite sequels

Escape from LA is fun, yes, but as good or better than the original? Hell no. The CG doesn’t even really bother me, what bothers me is that its waaaaaaay too tongue in cheek that its attempt at satire comes off extremely ham-fisted. Having to sit through scenes of Snake surfing and shooting hoops is just icing on the cheese cake. No thanks. The ending is cool (still not as cool as the inherent “middle finger” in NY) and so is the Eastwood-style standoff. But other than that LA seems like a spoof of NY…even Russell’s portrayal of Snake overdoses on The Man with No Name and almost comes off as a cartoon version of the character.

I also really didn’t care for the whole Che Guevara-type Revolution being led by a completely uncharismatic actor (compared to Isaac Hayes’ portrayal of The Duke) and the annoying bitch that plays The First Daughter.

Yeah its not one of my favorite Carpenter films.

Except that it's not technically a sequel. There was never a Surf 1.

But it's great cheesy 80's fun, I love it.

Cold Prey is great, but Cold Prey 2 is even better.

I know, but in the 80's you never knew there wasn't a Surf 1 unless you read paperback review manuals.
