F___! I just bought the German version. This is one of my favourite films so I might have to get this version as well. I really hate double dipping on DVDs, though.

Show some love for the R1 region, please! I anticipate an R1 release for this, hopefully, sometime in the near future -- waiting with bated breath.

I'm sure that an R1 will surface one day so perhaps it's best (for me) to just keep the German disc until that happens. Does anyone know why this film seems to have fallen through the cracks in R1? With the release of "Mulholland Drive" I expected this film to soon follow.

Universal owns it in R1.
I'm torn between ordering this or keeping my old disc until it gets a R1 release. |

My Sister got me this for Christmas and I just watched it last night. She ordered it from amazon.fr and I thought I'd give you guys a little review here...
First of all, the hologram box is fuckin' awesome!!! It features a picture of Patricia Arquette superimposed over a picture of Pullman. However, She changes from Renee to Alice to Robert Blake, depending on how you hold the box. Also, it's really sturdy, no cheap cardboard but all plastic. If you open the box, two things come out: a booklet and a DVD case. The booklet is in French and it contains in depth info on the film by a french author who has written several books on Lynch. I haven't read it yet (just flipped through it), but it looks pretty well written. This guy is no dumb ass, I get the impression he knows what he 's talking about. Of course, it helps if you understand french The DVD case contains 2 Discs. One with the movie, one with the extra's. I haven't watched the extra's yet, I'll post more on those later. The disc with the movie is what you really wanna hear about!! Ok, first of all, you get to choose wether your menus are in french or in english. Second, the menus look awesome!! There ARE chapter stops, but they'll confuse you. They have weird names (sometimes only numbers) and it's my guess that the chapter names contain clues... but then again, I could be wrong. The movie disc also contains a small extra showing you all the character's names and when you select them you see a small clip from the movie depicting that character. So what about the movie itself? WOW!!! I chose the English 5.1 DTS track and it was just a whole new experience!! The picture quality is excellent, really, I've heard things about anamorphic softening and such, but it really doesn't show. The colors are vibrant and it all just looks delicious. The best part however, is the DTS track. David Lynch relies a lot on sound in his movies, so a good audio track is very important. Well, this track lives up to all of your expectations!! The David Bowie song just blew me away in the beginning. There's good use of the rear speakers throughout the movie and the sound is very clear. I'm not kidding, this is really the best it ever has and probably ever will sound!! Overall, this was a whole new experience for me. I have seen the movie several times before on the old Dutch dvd, but this french disc really is the only way to go IMO. Well, I hope this has been informative. The disc is worth every penny. Really, every detail (the box, the booklet, the menus) is top notch and the movie will give you a whole new experience. Also, I have to admit, last night was the first time the story started making sense to me but that probably has nothing to do with the improved quality. Edit : Well, I just watched the extra's. The old interviews with Pullman, Arquette, Loggia and Lynch were all on the Dutch dsic, so nothing new for me there. They're quite good though, especially the one with Arquette. She's such a charmingly beautiful and intelligent woman. There's also a new interview with Lynch, which is very interesting. Then there's a 'making of' which just features some behind the scenes material and which was also already on the Dutch disc. It's pretty cool, but very short and not very informative. There's also a featurette, which just mixes material from the old interviews with some scenes from the film. And, last but not least, there's a teaser and a trailer. All in all the extra's are kinda meager, but still worth watching. I don't think other new releases will feature any new stuff as it's already hard enough to get Lynch to talk about his older films. Anyway, the best extra in my book is the remastered print and the DTS track. If you're a Lynch fan, this is the way to go. It's worth every penny. I'm really not into double dipping, but this time I'm glad I have. Last edited by Spacevis; 12-30-2005 at 01:19 PM. |

Sounds sweet, but I've got a decent R4 edition and I'm confident that Lynch will personally provide us with a disc that has superior picture and sound with some good extras.
