The Convent R1 dvd is going to be cut...
I read an interview with Mike Mendez a couple of weeks ago in which he talked about the dvd.
This R1 release, to be released on the 11st of December by (guess who...) Trimark, is supposed to include some cool extras (commentary, behind-the-scenes & even some deleted footage), but it's going to be CUT! Here's what the director said: «"The Convent" is supposed to be out on video and DVD on December 11th, 2001. Just in time for Christmas. It will be R-rated so it will have 19 seconds less of gore, but if all goes according to plan, we will more than make up for it on the "Extra Features". This hopefully will be a very loaded disk.» Does anyone know Trimarks' e-mail contact? I can't believe they're cutting the movie... This is one of the coolest "horror/comedies" in a long time, and it deserves to be released uncut. I can't believe this idiots that cut horror movies because they believe they will sell more copies that way. Think about it, who's more likely to buy this movie: us, horror fans, or some teen-movie lover? Horror fans, of course. And of course the best way to please us is by releasing cut versions... Paramount still hasn't understood why they don't sell a lot of copies of their cut Friday the 13th dvds... anyone knows?

Individual fans tend to buy unrated videos/ discs, of course... But R-rated cuts sell especially well to rental outfits and the like (i.e. Blockbuster which, by and large, will only get the R rated versions), where the bigger money is to be made.
It's not like Trimark and the rest are so incredibly stupid as to make extra work for themselves just to make less money... What these companies have to be convinced of (hoping, that it's even, in fact, the case) is that there's enough of an individual buyers' market that it would be profitable to release unrated/ uncut editions as well. It's certainly true, however, that cutting the balls off a picture like this defeats the purpose of a picture like this... |

Yes, from what I gather, it will be actually five minutes of footage lost. (Amazon.com data vs. theatrical release info on IMDB.com/allmovie.com)
I've hear good things about this movie, so I am disappointed by this. I'm no longer in so much of a rush to purchase it. I'll be looking to rent if I can.Is Trimark notorious for this kind of thing? Judging from the above, this is not the first time this has happened. And Wener, what is the source of your quotations? They crack me up.

Well, Trimark put out the cut, R-rated disc of Return of the Living Dead 3 (a film that gets all its strength from its over the top gore/ creature effect stuff... so when you cut that, this film really feels the loss)... That's all I can think of off-hand, but I don't do very well at associating films with their studios/ distributors/ etc.
I'll probably hold off for a while and hope maybe an uncut Convent will turn up on some import R0 disc or something... Oh well. Oh. And, lesse...The first quote is from Hal Hartley's film Henry Fool, where James Urbaniak's unleashed poetry has surprising effects on the lives of everybody around him, including Parker Posey and her menstrual cycle. I recommend it, though it really drifts in the second half. LIke all Hartley films - inconsistent, but worth seeing. And Jason Alexander (playing Nathan Lane's character) shouts the second quote at the guy from Lie Down With Dogs in Terrance McNally's slightly hammy and slightly sappy, but still fairly terrific Love! Valour! Compassion! (based on his own play of the same name).

And on THE CONVENT, I am not fucking buying a cut version. We should all get together and send those rejects a piece of our minds. This is bullshit! What's wrong with unrated version? BULLSHIT!! Censorship is going to get out of hand with Trimark. |
