It's brilliant, and no, it's not gory. There are some nasty scenes, one involving a pit full of ants and another involving a clenched hand, but these scenes aren't nasty because of gore. This is a very subdued, slow burning film with a fascinating plot and some creepy photography of the ants. It's not for the easily bored gorehound type.

I remember that one as being kinda trippy, the micro photography of the ants was great.

Just watched this and while I didn't think it was the greatest movie, the insect footage was really quite remarkable. So interesting regardless of the storyline. The ending is open to interpretation and definitely is one of those that could be discussed.
I read that this DVD from Paramount is cut? Also, there's an original ending - the ants merge the woman and the surviving scientist into a single being genetically altered with elements of the ant colony DNA included as the first step in creating a new advance speices.

Was this the one Saul Bass directed ? He was the great title designer, did the credits to PSYCHO and numerous classics.I recall he directed a strange 70's flick,I thought it was this. The imagery in PHASE IV certainly looks like something a title designer would come up with, offbeat and striking.

I like the movie a lot. But, I have a thing for 70s sci-fi. As others have said, it's trippy, slow moving or thoughtfully paced, and has some beautiful macro photography. It's also a more "scientifically" thought out ant invasion. I hung out with a bunch of entomologists in college and they loved this film for it's hypothetical accuracy. But, it's definitely not a film for everyone. Somewhere else on this forum I described this as the "2001" of ant invasion movies. So, I think if you can dig 2001, you'll probably be able to get behind this one.
