The Boogeyman (1980) old vs. new DVDs

Which DVD of The Boogeyman is better--the old Anchor Bay double feature with The Devonsville Terror, or the new Sony double feature with Return of the Boogeyman (aka Boogeyman 3)? I know that the old DVD is non-anamorphic and the new one is anamorphic, but aside from that how is the picture quality? The old one is still available from Amazon, and if the picture quality isn't greatly improved I may go with that one because I've heard some godawful things about Return of the Boogeyman.

After initially balking at the Sony anamorphic release - I have to say it's hand down the better in picture quality. The A.B. release was sweeeeet and, TO ME, is the better release for two reasons: the co-feature DEVONSVILLE TERROR is quite nice and the original 1980 Boogey Man TV spots!!!!!

Thanks. I bought the AB release today at a local DVD store for not much more than it would cost online (they also had the Sony DVD for the same price), and I think I made the right decision.

I have both and I watch the AB release more. Plus the original spots! Sony couldn't spring for those for some reason.

Okay, I watched The Boogeyman last night. It's non-anamorphic but it looks surprisingly good for an AB DVD circa 1999. I could care less about anamorphic if the transfer is better than average.

And btw, has anyone else noticed how absurd the premise of that movie is? A killer mirror?? WTF?

The movie is A TRIP! What was the writer/director smoking? I loved it...back then, it seemed all the horror movies were trying to do "something" to top the others. That "Halloween"-ish opening was not an homage in my eyes, but more of "the same" thing. That music, though...how I miss those days when all the horror movies were trying to sound like "Halloween" (even "Student Bodies" had a great score).
I skipped thu both DVDs briefly and that AB DVD is just fine. There are no nice TV spots on the Sony DVD - none for THE BOOGEY MAN. There's your better judgement right there

I got the old AB one ages ago. It's the only way to go.

I agree - plus that film DEVONSVILLE TERROR is pretty nifty.

There's a new R2 release by Italian Shock and the quality is excellent.

FYI, the writer is the girl who plays the lead character, among others... it actually took three people to write this thing. That kinda explains the incoherence in some parts

Suzanna Love, Uli Lommel's wife at the time. She's a pharmaceutical or cosmetics heiress, as far as I can remember. Incredibly attractive, she has a very clean, natural beauty that was a standout in films from this genre in 1980.
