Silence of the Lambs CC vs. MGM
Just curious as to what some of the differences were. I looked at hte back and it seemed pretty identical, but I read somewhere that they were different deleted scenes and commentaries. Just curious as to whether or not I should get the MGM. Oh, and another thing, anamorphic doesn't really mean anything to me right now since i don't have a 16x9 TV

Here are MY thoughts on this [ sorry, Paff!
]:When MGM announced this special edition, the question on everyone's mind was, "Should I still keep my Criterion disc?" True fans will actually want BOTH copies. The MGM version does provide a superior picture, and the documentaries are required viewing. But everyone should still locate the Criterion release if only for the commentary, as well as the serial killer essays on that disc. And I can attest that the Criterion laserdisc does have better sound. The bottom line is that it doesn't hurt to have more than one version of certain movies, and The Silence of the Lambs is one of the best. Get this disc. |

I forgot to mention that I already have the Criterion... I just hate having two copies of movies... I did it with AoD but that was just because I missed out on the 2 disc set. Man, now that' sjust more money I gotta spend... damn DVDs
thanks for the info.

But it really doesn't hurt to have both. The docu on the new MGM disc is REALLY good. But you don't get the Criterion commentary, so definitely hold on to that disc too. If you're happy with the Criterion disc (and I know I am), you can wait for a sale or till you're in better financial straits to buy the MGM disc. Get both.

I've got both versions of the film and I'd have to agree with the general consensus that if you're a fan of the film, you'll want both versions. The MGM disc will obviously be asy to find, however, the Criterion version is long out of print and could take some digging to find it. Maybe want to try e-bay, but youll probably end up paying $50 or more for it.

I have both discs, though I also hate having to buy two versions unless one's a clear upgrade.
MGM's version has better picture by far. The sound I think is about even, though I respect the opinions of the reviewers here who say the Criterion is better. The doc is great, but I kept my Criterion disc for the commentary (as well as some of the different features). If you're only going to watch the movie, I'd say you'd be OK with the MGM disc - the better A/V wise, with ease of accessability and a nice doc, to boot. But if you've got the Criterion one already, don't pitch it if you buy the MGM disc. |

The MGM has a better picture, 5.1 sound, and alot more deleted scenes. The new doc. is also excellent.
The Criterion has an awesome commentary track, one of the best pieced together tracks I've heard. Plus the serial killer essays are a great touch. I recommend both. |
