Lady Frankenstein
The DVD Drive In version and Madacy version are the same. But the colours of the DVD Drive In version are much better! And it is 16x9 enhanced.
If we want future releases of lost Italian gems we have to support DVD Drive In. Buy this DVD instead of the Madacy version. http://www.dvddrive-in.com/ladyfrankenstein.htm Recommended for fans of gothic Horror.

Just watched the DVD Drive-In version last night. As pointed out above there is cropping on the left and right, more so on the right. It's also tight at the top and so probably on the bottom but not noticably. There's a lot of talk of this being a pristine print of Lady Frankenstein from those involved with it and while it is perhaps the best this film has ever look I would not consider it "pristine" by any stretch of the imagination. It's worse off than the Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things transfers out there. Very grainy with diluted colors, there's quite a bit of film damage throughout. This probably has more to do with the budget at which it was shot but there you have it.
I watched an interview with the director and that's pretty interesting, what he has to say about the pre-production and tidbits about Roger Croman were all entertaining to hear but there's also quite a bit of "so what" too. There's also an easter egg of deleted scenes from what looks like the original Spanish VHS that had the uncut international version. These scenes are all in Spanish, no subbing, and so for English speakers is rather useless as it's just dialog and nothing earth shattering. I really enjoyed the movie itself, a pretty smart script with good gothic sensibilities. Joseph Cotten made a good Frankenstein and Rosalba Neri made for an even better Frankenstein. It felt like low budget Hammer with a little bit of spice.

I have the Madacy double feature and the DVD Drive-In version. The Madacy was a waste of money (6 bucks). The DVD Drive-In version is the best one - yeah zoomboxed, but it looks fine. Sounds fine. It's got extras...if you can find the DVD Drive-In version, by all means GET IT. Also there are some awesome TV spots of '70's horror flicks on there as an extra. Yes, it's releases like this that DVD players were made for!

It's been a long while since I've read up on Lady Frankenstein, but I seem to recall that the "uncut" Lady Frankenstein no longer exists. Something like that. May be wrong, though.

Eh, there were only a few shots that were greatly effected. It felt off but was certainly watchable, more like extreme overscan. I'm sure if they did the telecine again today it'd be easier and cheaper to get a better job done.
That's too bad about the uncut version being lost, according to the director the negative was sent to Roger Corman so I don't hold out much hope for it. Corman recut it so who knows what happened with all the footage in an era when a b-movie movie was only seen as good for a few theatrical runs and then that's it, off to the bone yard.
