It doesn't make sense. I read on DVDDrive-In that Retromedia was going to release Witchmaker and now Code Red is the one releasing it! Is there any reason why?

Well L.Q Jones, whom you might know as the star of countless Peckinpah films to directing BOY AND HIS DOG, made WITCHMAKER, and he did do a commentary for Code Red's WITCHMAKER, so looks like Jone's didn't want a release from RetroMedia and gave the rights to Code Red, as the film could have fallen into public dormain, which explains how RetroMedia can release it as well?

That elusive thing known as "rights" has never been much of an impediment to Retromedia. Yes, they do legitimately make deals with rights owners to release their films, but they will also release things that they haven't licensed on the apparent excuse that they've fallen into a faux public domain status - ie, seemingly most of their releases of Japanese and European films especially.

I have a doubt that you guys might help me...
I never heard of Witchmaker before, so I did a little search and from what I´ve read, this a late 60s movie. My main like in horror movies are from the mid 70s to the early 90s. Does this movie have anything special and does it rocks? If you were to compare this movie to another what it would be? |

I received the Rituals DVD earlier today.
The transfer looks pretty good to me. Yeah, there is some print damage at times and it looks very much "Grindhouse" — but overall it's the best the film has ever looked in the home market. The colors and detail are good, and it's Progressive encoded. It certainly looks better than The Redeemer transfer, let's put it that way.

I have just watched the Rituals DVD, and I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, there is a lot of dirt and damage, but the image itself is sharper than I had dared hope. My bootleg has nowhere near the same level of detail. For once, we get to see exactly how disfigured Matthew Crowley is, and it's pretty disturbing (excellent makeup). The sound is also better than expected, and while some dialogue is muffled, again, more of it is audible than on my bootleg - conveying what a philosophically rich and artistically strong movie this actually is.

Mine's been shipped and should be here mid next week. Despite my issues with Code Red, I really don't see the problem with this release at all. I've seen a few screenshots posted around the net, and the picture quality is WAY better than the vhs rip I have. I fully expected that this film wouldn't look pristine as it's been neglected for so long. I'm not sure how anyone could expect an Anchor Bay cleanup job with this film. It looks better than vhs, and judging from the reviews I've read, it sounds a lot better than vhs too. That's all I can ask for.

I'm a little late to the party, but now that this title has piqued my interest, is there anywhere reputable that has this in stock?

FYE already lists it as "Discontinued" — how true that is though I haven't a clue.

What I don't understand is how code red is complaining about only selling so many copies when at the same time people are complaining about having a hard time getting a hold of a copy because it's on backorder everywhere. Doesn't sold out usually means it's doing well or am I missing something?

I don't get how Code Red can be all "this has only sold _____ copies" on titles that haven't been out even a week. Some people wait a month or two to buy. Not everybody pre-orders.

All online stores I've checked either show it out of stock, backordered, or discontinued in that one case. I'm glad I already received my copy a few days ago now!
