Do you read way too many reviews before buying??

I gotta stop doing that!!! I sometimes buy a horror movie just because it is cheap, read reviews which are mostly negative, sits on the shelf, watch it months and months later....And enjoy it. Everyone has their opinion, but I have missed out on alot (oop) because of this.

Watch them when you buy them.

I don't let negative reviews put me off at all. I'm not afraid of posting opposing views either. Neither should you.

I never really read reviews, I want to go into a film knowing as little as possible. The only thing I'll look at is how the A/V is on a disc and what cut of the film it is. So long as all that is up to snuff and something about what little I know tickles my fancy I'll check it out.

With very few exceptions, if DVD reviews just reviewed the DVD and not the movie, the world would be a better place.

I read reviews for fun. I don't take what anybody says seriously. That's just my way of thinking. The other factor that playes a big part is WHO the reviewer is. On allot of web sites I see allot of teenagers running off at the mouth. That plays a big part.

Yeah gore you got to stop doing that! ::::WHACKS U::::............!

Oh, and I do read reviews, many times of films I've already seen. You can learn a lot from reviews, and it's entertaining/fun to find out what others think.

Come to think of it, much of what gets posted at sites such as this are mini-reviews - albeit sometimes condensed to a single line.

I'll read reviews for other people's opinions, but I don't mold my ability to see, or not see, that movie because of that.

Yeah, I usually read the content of a few reviews only after I've watched the movie. More often though I'll just stay away from a thread about a movie and then after seeing it spend the time to read the thread and finally reply with my own critical thoughts that must be read with abated breath.

I read reviews quite often. I basically use them as a guide to decide whether to buy or rent. If a movie is getting good reviews across the board I'm more likely to outright buy it. If it's getting panned across the board I'll rent first. Also, reading reviews first has helped me enjoy certain movies more than I would have had I not read the reviews. Case in point, the Halloween remake. I kept reading about the prequel/remake aspect, the endless unwarranted cameo's, and Myers' somehow superhuman capabilities. Knowing about all of these things before seeing it let me put my bias aside and enjoy the movie on a pure 'fun' type level which wouldn't have happened otherwise.

I usually read reviews while I wait for prices to drop down a notch.

I buy a lot of horror dvds during October because i.e. Amazon.com has a big halloween sale and you can get things up to 70% off their retails price.

To give you an example of that, here I copy & paste my last order from Amazon.com :

1 "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (The Gruesome Edition)" Dennis Hopper; DVD; $5.99
1 "Re-Animator" Jeffrey Combs; DVD; $9.99
1 "Phantasm" David Arntzen; DVD; $6.99
1 "The Silence of the Lambs (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)" Jodie Foster; DVD; $9.99

Yes, 6 bucks for Texas 2 (2 discs), 9.99 for 2-disc edition of Re-Animator, 7 bucks for AB Phantasm & 9.99 for the 2-disc of Lambs with the recipe packaging. The order was made on October 31, 1 day before all those dvds went back to their original prices. I think I saved like 30 bucks easily.

Other purchases from October included the Tombs of Blind Dead box set for 41 bucks plus shipping, I think that one was a cool purchase. :-)

Yes, I read too many reviews and write my own ones in Spanish in a website from Argentina.

I usually just go on dvdcompare.net and look for the best edition, whether it be R1, R2, R4 etc etc. That's how I make my decisions.

I do alot of research before I buy pretty much everything. Its pretty much habit now. The information is right there, so I try to capitalize on it.

It also helps when I hear a movie getting a good reaction from forum posters. Hell, I wouldn't have half my collection if it weren't for recommendations from sites like this!

I can't afford to buy every movie that sounds cool, so I do a lot of review-seeking first before buying something I've never heard of. I like Mondo Digital, DVD Drive-In and (of course) this website for solid overviews of movies. Otherwise I'll read and see if it's something I'm curious in.

I agree.
I remember in the old days before the net, when all I had to look forward to was reviews in mags or books.
I just take internet reviews with a grain of salt. Sometimes (rarely) too much info. can be as bad as a blind buy in my opinion.

I sometimes take reviews into account when it comes to seeing a movie in the first place, but they don't really affect my buying patterns, except in the case where they might talk about a bad transfer, etc.

I almost never buy a movie I haven't at least rented first.
