The Backwoods
OFFICIAL SITE
Spanish horror thriller 'The Backwoods' (Bosque De Sombras) starring Gary Oldman, is finally making its way to R1 DVD. Set in the Summer of 1978 'The Backwoods' tells the story of an English couple Lucy (Virginie Ledoyen) and Norman (Paddy Considine) who are going through a difficult patch in their relationship. They decide to spend some time at the house that their friends Paul (Gary Oldman) and his wife Isabel (Aitana Sanchez-Gijón) have bought in the north of Spain. Hidden away in the middle of a forest, and very much off the beaten track, the house seems ideal for some peaceful holidays. Their tranquil summer turns to horror when they discover a girl with horribly mutilated hands in a house in the forest. The locals aren't happy with the outsiders interference and for taking the girl from the house, and soon cultural differences start a whirlpool of violence between them. You can check out a trailer on the official site. |

it's so cool that all these super hard to find Spanish horror films are finally all making their way unto DVD, it seems that Spain is the new Italy now for old obscure horror films that no one thought they would ever see.

Good Straw Dogs-like movie, although I was very disappointed with how the script handled Oldman's character. I hope that I'm even half as cool as he is when I'm that age...

Saw this tonight as well and I thought it was very good. Dmeister is spot on with the Straw Dogs comparison. It had some good acting and a nice tone. It also wasn't near as predictable as I thought it was going to be.

Pretty disappointing for me. I think the description makes it seem like it is going to be something completely different than what it was. The opening credits were very annoying. Possibly the worst backwoods location as well (backferns). Maybe the fact that I watched "Far from Home: story of yellow dog" before this ( yeah Ill admit it ) had something to do with it. I was more entertained by that.

Bosque de sombras (2006)
I really enjoyed this flick. I thought Oldman was great in it.
A lot of the movies I've seen Oldman in have been costume affairs and/or his make up totally obscured his face. Oldman and the patriarch made the film for me. Nice tension and relationship problems add to the affair. |
