Picnic At Hanging Rock 3-disc Deluxe Edition
It's a R2 UK release, June 30. This is one I might have to wait for a Blu-ray of.

Is this a good film? I hear things here and there about it, but would love to know what people on this forum think about it.

I love it. One of the most haunting films ever made IMO.

It's an AMAZING film. You'll definitely never forget it. Might take a while to warm up to it, though. It's pretty slow, quiet (apart from once crazy scene) and atmospheric.
If you like David Lynch and/or unconventional, non-linear, inconclusive cinema, then I suggest you give it a try. This SE sounds amazing, although I'm not really that interested in the theatrical cut. The documentary sounds nice, though. And my old copy was pretty cheap, so I might double dip.

I knew it. Fuck, I just knew it. Before I even clicked the thread, I knew this wasn't going to be a R1/R0 NTSC release. Damn, it seems like every country in the world except the US and Canada has (or will have) a special edition DVD release of Picnic at Hanging Rock. Why is Criterion sitting on this title? They've had ten years to rerelease it properly (1.78:1 anamorphic transfer, the 2-hour Dream within a Dream documentary from 2004, a commentary track with Peter Weir and perhaps Anne-Louise Lambert (Miranda), the seven minutes of deleted footage from the theatrical cut) but we get nothing. In 2008 we still have a non-anamorphic barebones DVD of this wonderful film. Pathetic. Criterion needs to license it to another studio. They obviously don't give a damn about it.
The same thing is happening with Ms. 45. 16x9 enhanced uncut DVDs are popping up in other countries, but good 'ole Image Entertainment just doesn't give a shit.

Will purchase! This is one of my favorite films.
Shannafey, I advise you to see this. One of the most atmospheric movies ever.

I remember being really intrigued and kind of spooked by it when I saw it on Showtime in the late 70's/early 80's, and I sought out a copy on VHS through one of the catalogue importers/dubbers I used to buy from (and feeling ever so illicit while doing so)...
I watched it recently and realized that it's pretty damn annoying. It's got atmosphere in spades, but man...I hate to say I think I've had it with this movie. |

Sounds nice. I've been almost going to order the Aussie 2-disc set, but it sounds like this one may be superior.

Sounds great...this is one my favorite films, and I'd definitely love to have a nice SE for it, especially one in anamorphic WS.

Unless the R2 has some serious image-problems, the Criterion version kinda blows in comparison ... Which isn't often the case!

This appears to be the Australian DVD from a few years back with the Theatrical Cut included. A commentary would definitely have made me pick up this UK release but my Aussie disc will do just fine.

That's because the Criterion version is almost 10 years old. They've been re-releasing many of their older titles with anamorphic transfers, better restorations, and more extras, so there is hope that sometime in the future they'll re-release it.
