Spitfire's Horror Film of the Week: The Cottage (2008)

The Cottage (2008)

Have been meaning to see this one for a while, and just received it. I will write my thoughts on it on wednesday.

(Synopsis)
Sleeps Six Bloody Comfortably.

Forced into hiding after their kidnapping plan goes awry, two rival siblings, David (Andy Serkis) and Peter (Reece Shearsmith) find themselves fighting for their sanity while they hole up in a secluded country cottage. Weighed down by a hostage who refuses to stay quiet, or tied down, they quickly find themselves held captive by their own victim.

But everyone's problems go from bad to worse when they come face to ax with their psychotic neighbor - a demented farmer with a dark, nasty secret buried where you'd least expect.

I saw this last week and my enjoyment of the film went from thinking this is going to be tough to sit through to really enjoying it by the time it was over. A very nice blend of comedy and horror which doesn't often work for me. Good pick Spitfire I think you will have some good varying responses with this one.

Well I just go through watching this one. And I really enjoyed it. The blend of humor, dialogue, and suspense was well executed. If I had to wrap up the blend I'd say it reminded me of the wittiness of a Guy Ritchie movie, like Snatch;in the way the characters and the caper are involved. It also adds a mix of Shaun of the Dead with the humor. And a final touch of Incident on and off a Mountain Road from Masters of Horrors.

The killer in the movie was really (his progression to kill) cool and did remind me of the killer from Incident (Masters of Horrors) in some ways.

I especially liked when:

Spoiler:
The farmer rips the spinal cord of one of the victims and raises it in the air.

All in all, it is a fun-slasher that is very campy and witty. I really recommend it, worth checking out.

Hey all, I've got to admit, I've been lagging on watching some of your picks recently...but what ever happened to the movie of the week club? I did a search and this was the most recent thread I could find, (someone correct me if I'm wrong...) I thought Ash28m's idea to do this was great, and had a lot of fun participating in the first round of picks, but now it seems like it's disappeared. Are we taking a break? Did we cycle through the initial list already? Are the guidelines being reworked? Hey movie of the week, where'd ya go?

As soon as I heard Jennifer Ellison was in it I've wanted to see it.

I'm guessing we had some slackers on the list, that's what hurt it. We should reboot, what with all the new blood coming in. Unless DeathDealer wants to pick up where we left off (I assume he was the last to go).

I actually liked the build up to this movie, the non-horror parts, more than the actual horror parts. I thought it started out quite funny and would've been happy just having a story about the two bros and their captive. The horror elements didn't work as well for me, but the sense of humour for this film kept things going. Plus some of the kills were fun.

Not a perfect movie, but a decent attempt at the comedy/horror genre, with the comedy winning the battle.
