First Look: MASTERS OF HORROR 2
Tomorrow the MASTERS OF HORROR: SEASON 2 box set streets, complete with the 13 episodes (including Carpenter's PRO-LIFE and Argento's PELTS) that closed off the now defunct anthology series. While I've always loved the PHANTASM sphere set, this might just take the cake as coolest looking box set with the textured, opening skull that houses all the discs. The skull is amazingly detailed, with all the groves and bone you'd expect. It feels just like the real thing too, with a coarse texture and aged and withered grooves. It really has to be taken out of its flimsy plastic boxing to really be appreciated.
In terms of content, there's nothing new here (unlike the box set of the first season), with all the individual discs just packaged together disc-only inside the skull. Still, each disc had a plethora of supplements for the episode itself, so there's definitely no lack of behind-the-scenes stuff here. All the discs come in their proper 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen aspect and Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks. Here's a complete list of the episodes included:
Here's a collection of hi-res photos taken by moi just to show you the quality of this little thing:
Out tomorrow, July 29th, 2008, the 11-disc set (two of the discs are double feature flippers) retails for $86.97 but most retailers have it out for $64.99. If you're missing the old days of cable TV horror anthologies, then this might be your last chance to get in on it before it's gone. And visually give your collection some authority in the process!

Thanks SO much for putting up some kind of article about this boxset even if you weren't planning on doing a full page for it.
I only have 2 of the standalone releases and really want this box. But I think I'll wait until someone over at Amazon dot com sells it for under $45. Which should happen before too long. The first season boxset was amazing, though! I added up the time amount on all the bonus features combined. All the video bonus features (not adding the audio commentaries) total= 23:29:27 (that is absolutely a pimping for anyone to get the 1st Mausoleum boxset if you don't already have it). All 13 episode discs plus the 14th bonus disc equal that amount. That's over 2 hours of video bonuses per disc. Plus, 3 of the 13 movie discs had more than 1 commentary. I can't help but say that the amount of bonuses for these 2nd season discs... it's more than that they can't compare. It's like- why spend the same friggin' amount of money or more for this cruddy 2nd season when you don't even get as many bonus features.

Just got this today. Two of the discs are flippers.
![]() Also, I can't get the skull to stay on straight and getting the DVD you want out of it is like literally performing brain surgery (perhaps that was their intention?). Aside from those hiccups, this is a cool set. |

So, the space between each disc is really slim, huh? One would think the designers of this set would notice that and think to fix it or something. Did people honestly complain that the 1st season's Mausoleum box was too thick / wide?

Saw this at Best Buy and it does look really cool. I'll wait for a used set down the road since I have dvdr's of all the shows anyway, but Kudos on the case.

And you'd be right. The 2nd season was a huge disappointment. But regardless, I still want the set. The films/episodes I want to see the most I've still yet to see. And I'm dying to hear the commentaries. The commentary for The Screwfly Solution was better than the episode/film!
