Talking Have A Nice Weekend (1975)

Wow. Just wow. This proto-slasher is in a whole other league of bad. HAVE A NICE WEEKEND is one of those earnest "The War Came Home" Vietnam flicks that thrived in the late seventies with a bit of a slasher twist. There's a few good kills, especially for the time frame, with a couple vacationers getting it by knife, hoe and harpoon. Even for a made for television flick, they do it with a fair bit of style, even if it becomes repetitive with each one cutting from a close up of the weapon, lens flare, close up of the corpse. The acting and script are lead though, so heavy and lifeless, but yet perfect for cheese connoisseurs.

The highlight? After the group find the first victim, each one sort of looks dumbfounded and continues to ask what happened? "He's dead God dammit!" But still each one keeps looking confused and asking the same dumb question when there's a clearly bloodied and dead man in front of them. It almost becomes absurdist comedy, like a "Who's on First" sort of routine. It's amazing. There's a bunch more like this throughout, capped off with the clincher...AN EPILOGUE. Yeah, it has its ironic last lines, flashes THE END and then...AN EPILOGUE. Basically it was a way to cut in a scene explaining all this mess that totally didn't fit within the resolve of the story, so they just tacked it on. Classic!

Anyone else see this bad movie masterpiece?

Yep, bad movie, but very enjoyable because of how amusing it is. It could have done with a few more kills though. With a sizeable cast, only three bite it? They couldn't even get that right...

A very obscure film. Quite the bad masterpiece indeed.

I downloaded a version off Cinemageddon a while back, but it was pretty compressed and choppy (like it was missing a couple frames here and there - possibly a PAL conversion). So, I've at least seen it and actually enjoyed it. It's nothing great, but I liked it enough where a decent DVD release would be welcome. At least an uncompressed VHS rip would suffice for now.

Glad you had a nice weekend watching this, Prey...I sure didn't!

Double feature this with the Sally Field MFT Home for the Holidays for the ultimate TV stinker slasher double bill!

Does anyone have the UK tape of this? I recently profiled the US tape as part of my ongoing VHS Archives series and would love to add a scan of the import sleeve.

VHS only! I imagine that's the way it'll probably stay, too!

I updated my post with the UK artwork. Thanks again, Justin!
