Favorite 1970s MGM Sci-Fi Movie?
They didn't release much sci-fi in the 70s, but the few they did were and still are great in my opinion. I did not include Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Rollerball as those were United Artists titles before the MGM fusion in 1980.

Great poll! And you only missed two MGM sci-fi films from the '70s: No Blade of Grass (1970) and Futureworld (1976). No Blade is the only one I haven't seen, and the rest are pretty much all classics in my opinion so this was a tough vote! But I have to go with Logan's Run as I grew up watching it. The remaining I didn't see until after I was 18.
I'd rank them the following: Logan's Run - A Coma - A Demon Seed - B+ Futureworld - B Westworld - B- Soylent Green - F

i haven't seen Logan's Run, but of the others i chose Coma. I've never been a fan of Westworld (hey, just realized that two of the entries up there were directed by Michael Chrichton), although Soylent Green is pretty good. I thought Demon Seed was pretty weak - but its based on a book by Dean (R.) Koontz, so what do you really expect?

I agree, great poll! Westworld is my favorite, with Soylent Green a pretty close second. Logan's Run is also good, but I don't care that much for Demon Seed (which was a $3 Big Lots pickup a few years ago). I saw Coma once a very long time ago.

Another vote for Coma. Scary stuff, and a terrific performance from Bujold. I've always loved those low-key, slowly building thrillers of the 70's.

Definitely Logan's Run for me, but I really enjoy the others on the list as well. Haven't seen Demon Seed though. Just watched the TV remake of Coma last night and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

True, forgot about that. It's easy to get them mixed up, since MGM has always released it for years now...and even did the remake.

I totally agree. I caught it on streaming a couple of years ago and kind of loved it, while WESTWORLD left me slightly disappointed.

Love all these movies, but picked Westworld. It's just a fun movie from start to finish.

I love all of those films but I voted for LOGAN'S RUN in the end.Grew up with it,I even own the original one sheet !
Anyone else ever notice that WESTWORLD and JURASSIC PARK (also by Chrichton) have essentially the same plot, fantastic resort, novelty attractions, computer failure, death and destruction and a chase all over the park.Switch out robots for dinosaurs and add the "Newman !" guy from SEINFELD and the're damn near the same picture. |

Didn't know there was so much love for Futureworld. I always thought it was a given that Westworld was much better.
I think Yul Brynner's Gunslinger in Westworld is one of the creepiest villains ever
