Trick 'r Treat director considering a sequel

Michael Dougherty, the writer/director of the long-delayed Trick ‘r Treat, has been doing press interviews to promote the release of the cult horror film. After three years of toiling through development at Warner Bros, the movie finally hit DVD shelves on Tuesday, and it’s definitely worth a look.
The R-rated movie is an anthology of four twisted and interwoven Halloween stories. I won’t give anything away, but they’re the kind of tales you’d tell during an eerie night around a campfire or while holding a flashlight under your chin. Dougherty shows them with such precision and clever direction that on film it’s just creepy and fun.
If you’ve had the chance to see it already, you’re probably wondering why WB dumped it to DVD without giving it at a chance in theaters. I wish I could tell you. It’s cast includes “True Blood” star Anna Paquin, the beautiful Lauren Lee Smith and Leslie Bibb, Dylan Baker, and Brian Cox, so it’s a wonder they couldn’t find a way to market it with a little positive word of mouth. Look at Paranormal Activity.
Luckily, the movie is the number one horror movie on Amazon and 13th for overall DVDs. It’s outselling Transformers 2. If you can find a copy, that is if it isn’t sold out or rented, you should pick it up especially with the spooky season around the corner.
If it does well on DVD, which it sounds like it will, Dougherty told MTV he already has part of a sequel planned out. “Because it’s an anthology film, it lends itself to telling another four stories which would intertwine – but I think you could take the film and explore how Halloween was celebrated in different locations, different time periods, and the one consistent character would be Sam, the mascot.” Sam is the frightening little orange fellow seen on the poster (pictured above).
Dougherty already has the villain and main character picked out, plus a bit of the stories that will wind together in a potential sequel. If he has it his way, there would be another Trick ‘r Treat every Halloween. Hopefully he’ll be back to direct as well.

Awesome news! Hopefully this happens. I would love to see a new movie every Halloween as there really isn't much to watch in theaters if you aren't a huge fan of Saw. That and because of its somewhat anthology format it could never get old as it would be completely new stories every year. Almost what they hoped the Halloween franchise would have became if the third movie was successful, which I wish it was as it would have been better then continuing with Michael Myers.

It seems like companies are a lot more willing to admit their mistakes these days with the relaunch of shows like Family Guy and Futurama, and movies like Riddick and Hulk given second chances.

It would be nice to see something other than another SAW sequel getting some attention every October. As long as the quality of the films keeps up to par with the first, I have no issues with there being several sequels.

Ditto (although I always liked Halloween 4: The Return of Michael myers from '88 a lot, myself). Indeed: I never got into the two Saw films I saw (haha, that sounds funny/rhythms), and so I would gladly welcome a new instalment or two with more Trick 'R' Treat films.

I'd love to see a sequel! Trick 'r Treat is the kind of movie I see myself revisiting. Can't think of a better way for the director to revisit than a sequel. It was so much fun to see a well made atmospheric horror film. I'm so burnt out on running zombies, bad cgi, and torture porn (the worst of all in my opinion).

I'm down for as many Trick 'r Treats as they can throw at us. I'm sure that Dougherty will return to write and direct the follow-up and maybe even a third entry. After that, he'll probably just stay on as a producer, perhaps writing an entry or two. I can see this series becoming a showcase for other up-and-coming talented writer / directors. The DTV nature of the films will help because it'll mean we can get new entries every year or two, and we can rent or buy them, then sit around with our buddies and enjoy the Hell out of them. I just hope it doesn't devolve into DTV junk like so many horror series have.

I'm really taken with the idea of Trick 'r Treat becoming a franchise. It has a mix that is almost perfect: the humor, the gore, the kids, the supernatural, the mundane, etc. The only elements that need to be bumped up a little more are suspense and horror.

I like the idea of the vignettes diverging from the milieu established by the first film. I think a tale of colonial horror could serve as a really awesome underpinning to a contemporary suite of horror stories.

I also love the idea that Trick 'r Treat is willing to steer classic monsters (vampires, werewolves, and hopefully mummies, witches, skeletons, etc.) away from psychological realism (of films like Harry Potter, Interview with the Vampire, Twilight, etc.) and back toward their roots as boogie men.

Yes, more, please. Caveat: so long as we aren't "treated" to some drawn-out origin tale of Halloween Kid. I thought his portrayal was very well done and understated.

But more tales of Halloween horror told in a clever anthology? Sign me up!

I agree. Bring the sequels!

Despite some modern trappings this one was a lot closer in spirit to the old Amicus anthologies than today's typical horror films. I got an old school vibe from virtually everything--the story conception, the characters, and the photographic style.

Funny how none of those things are marketable in the eyes of the studios.

Yeah in all honestly I too really like part 4 and even part 5 which a lot seem to hate (I think it does a great job with atmosphere and the Fall setting). Actually I like all of the Myers movies to a certain extent with Resurrection and the remake coming far behind though. But if I had a choice I would rather have had a different horror tale every year based around the holiday, then continuing with Myers just because it ended so nicely with part 2.. It's too bad we couldn't have had both! If only they just started Season of the Witch as it own franchise maybe people would have been a little kinder to it instead of hating it from the beginning because Myers wasn't in it.
