MGM doesn't have the rights to the original Scanners anymore. Just confirmed by Cliff MacMillan over at blu-ray.com.

I'm guessing the rights probably are with TWC and Anchor Bay (TWC's distributor). We'll have to pray for a remake if that's the case.

I'm fine with my british set who have the three films... I'll wait for Second Sight Films to get them on blu as they are no point of getting a trilogy without the original.

Yeah, I saw that. Maybe MGM licensed it out to Criterion? (After all, the Weinsteins didn't grab the rights to Black Christmas '74 when they released the remake in '06, so I think Criterion is more likely.)

I hope so too cuz I still have faith in Anchor Bay. If they did though they should release to coincide the Scanners II/III Double Feature.

Incidentally, I'm surprised Scream got Scanners III since that's in the Republic library which is currently owned by Olive.

I believe this set is Region B, not sure if you are Region Free or not.

Yeah I have a feeling since they are moderating the cast reunion that they are releasing this on Blu. I hope so as this is one of my favourite films, and most wanted Blu releases! Apparently they are announcing several big titles at this event on Nov. 16th so hopefully The Howling, The Burning, and Lifeforce are among the other titles.

I have heard this rumor as well. It's definitely a fact that Cronenberg was at the Criterion offices in August but that could be for numerous films, Naked Lunch, Shivers, The Brood, Dead Ringers, Crash, Rabid, ect.

Why does anybody still have faith in Anchor Bay? They have been terrible with their Bluray releases. Lack of extras, no menus, ect. They couldn't even bother to release Silent Night Deadly Night part 1 or 2 to coincide with their remake. They've really only released a few decent Blurays since the inception of Bluray and even they could be better, Halloween missing DVD extras, TV cut and proper colour scheme, Evil Dead missing extras from previous releases, ect.). Unless it's a new crappy DTV film Anchor Bay doesn't give a damn.

I'm region free, in fact it's the reason why I bought the blu-ray reader I own.
