It mystifies me how The Boogens can legally be shown on television and yet nobody can figure out who owns the rights to release the damned thing onto dvd and blu-ray. That said, I downloaded the film via bittorrent months ago and so I hope the rights holders choke on the amount of money lost for holding the film hostage for so long. However, if they released it tomorrow I would gladly purchase a legit copy in a heartbeat.

I believe a lot of the Republic Pictures catalog ended up split up between Paramount and Lionsgate - so it stands to reason one them owns the film now.

Just a question of which one. When it airs, see if there's a logo in the beginning, that's generally a good place to start - even if the company showing it only owns television rights, they have to know who owns distribution and that's a good lead to have - or you can do some digging online.

If Lionsgate owns it, I'm sure it's only a manner of time before it gets released - didn't they say last year they're releasing their entire catalog in the next three years? If it's Paramount however...might be a problem, unless they do a co-release a la MY BLOODY VALENTINE with LG.

I've read on the Fanedit Forums that the film was shot in full screen. Was that how it was shot or was it filmed with one of those cameras that shot it in widescreen and open-matted for home video/television?

If I remember to do so, I will check the company logo on my DVR recording.

Shout! Factory is in the process of trying to wrestle this away from Paramount. Cliff Mac, Shout! Fcatory producer in charge of the Corman flicks, mentioned this to me on Home Theater Forum, on the Shout! Factory's 2011 DVD Line-Up thread.

Hope to God he succeeds.

I own the old VHS, but I also transferred the 16x9 (Paramount) TV version to a DVD-R.

I've never compared the two versions side to side, but the framing looks very nice in widescreen. I'd really be surprised if the film was originally composed with 1.33 in mind.

I'd buy the DVD/Blu-ray in a heartbeat if/when it ever gets released again.

I'm currently working on a review, and I still own the VHS version as well as a LBX bootleg I got from Cinema De Bizarrre, and, if I can recall, I did do a comparison once, of course, I'll have to do it again, just to make sure, but I believe there was a bit more picture visible on the sides of the LBX version.

Glad its on TV at least.

Back when Monsters HD was around they played The Boogens in HD many times.

Did I mention that Monsters HD was the greatest channel ever, ever.

Saddest day when that channel got dismantled.

Does your 16x9 cut have a "DARK" watermark on the upper right of the screen?

Thanks

Great film, very underrated and I also wish for a proper release on dvd. Would be cool if Shout! Factory snatched it up, they've done some outstanding releases.

The TCM TV print does have the Paramount logo before it. Followed by a logo for Taft International Pictures.

I really hope Shout Factory can get the rights, that would be amazing!

I imported the video from amazon years ago, also downloaded a copy. This did get a pretty big general release. I remember it played my local cinema here in scotland at the time, i was too young to go see it though, just remember looking at the poster as i went to see other films. I also remember the movie trailer being shown on tv.
