Stanley Kubrick Limited Edition Collection Blu-ray

I just got this in the mail yesterday. I've never purchased anything quite like it. All of the discs were either previously released (including two by different studios), or are now available separately (Lolita and Barry Lyndon via Amazon exclusively). The set includes the latest version of A Clockwork Orange and the deluxe version of Full Metal Jacket. it has been announced however, that a new version of Lolita and Full Metal Jacket will be released next year. So why buy this expensive set that is "limited?" I guess because of the 40 page book exclusive to this set. It reminds me of those small children's books when I was a tyke. I dare not even open the pages too wide for fear that I'll destroy the binding. Worst of all, this set trumps the Alien Anthology as the worst packaging of all-time. You are forced to use your thumb to yank the discs out of their sleeves. It requires significant effort to do so. Needless to say, I needed to purchase additional blank blu-ray cases (as I did for the Alien Anthology) for these discs. All these complaints aside, I love having Kubrick's films in HD (especially the Criterion Paths of Glory) and I'm looking forward to the Criterion "The Killing/The Killer's Kiss" in August.

It is a bit of a bitch to get the discs out, but like with the Alien set, as long as you use a bit of care and finesse when pulling the disc out, the worst they'll suffer is a bit of smudge on the edge. At least that's been my experience with the set so far.

Check out the trouble this guy had (from Amazon):

The packaging for the new Kubrick box set has slots for each disc with a point too narrow to remove the disc. If you cut open any of the sleeves, you'll find that the cardboard on the top and bottom has a sort of nub on each side, making the pathway by which the disc would be removed slightly smaller than the disc itself. In order to remove the disc, you have to grab a hold of it with your thumb on the info surface and yank very hard. The close tight space the disc is in is just cardboard, some of the slots had debris which put gashes in the each disc removed. The packaging literally destroys every disc removed from it as intended. I managed to save a few of my own discs by cutting open the packaging (Hence how I saw the nub cuplrits) but this has rendered the set unreturnable, so I'm out a hundred bucks with the prospect of buying up separate discs.

I guess I got a good one then. I've removed and placed back Barry Lyndon several times to show friends and besides the aforementioned thumb smudge on the edge, nothing happened.

Hrm, just looked at my Barry Lyndon disc again and it does seem to have a slight scuff near the edge of the disc. I sent an e-mail to WB about it. Maybe a program where purchasers of the set are compensated with separate cases for the films?

You see? And you know that it's not easy to scratch a blu-ray. This is just a bizarre box set.

Well, it is Warner after all. I ordered one Blu-ray direct from their website once, and it arrived factory sealed and everything. I opened it up and the disc was actually sliced in half down to the center hub.

I'm still trying to figure out how that one happened...

Well it's not a crucial scratch. I had to look really hard to notice it, but it is there. Maybe I'll just buy some spare cases or something.

I just checked all of mine and the 2001 disc is scratched up. I just contacted Warner Bros. This set was too expensive for me to allow for scratched discs. Thankfully the others were fine.

I was looking at this the other day, but from the sounds of it it's going to be a hard sell due to the price & packaging.

It's a shame too because this is otherwise a fantastic set. I had no problem plopping down the $100 for the set (which averages out to a little over $10 a movie), but I hope the issue can be rectified.

I also love how, NOT EVEN A FUCKING WEEK after the release of their Kunrick blu-ray boxset, Warner has announced anniversary edition blu rays of Full Metal Jacket and Lolita for 2012. Fucking assholes, seriously. It's like the announcement was made intentionally to piss people off.

Yeah in hindsight I wish I would have held onto my old discs. On the bright side. I haven't really damaged the unit at all and I didn't cut the thing apart like the dumb ass in that customer review, so I may be able to return it to Amazon and just use the refund to buy all the discs separately, save for Full Metal Jacket and Lolita.

EDIT: Scratch that. Amazon knocks off 50% of what you paid if it has been opened.
