The packaging they got for the Back to the Future set was way better too. Just a fold-out boxset. Glad I grabbed the UK tin of that one and not the North American set.

I actually haven't had any trouble getting the discs out (nothing beyond fingerprint marks). I actually really like the packaging, the fold out booklet-style boxset (like the Alien Anthology) is rather beautiful.

I'm just pissed that they announced SEs of Lolita and Full Metal Jacket like 6 days after the Kubrick boxset was released.

The set is gorgeous no doubt. I did an online review of it and I basically summed the set up as "90% Best Blu-ray Release of the Year and 10% the worst fucking thing ever."

Plus here in Canada we are getting a re-release of the current disc with a Steelbook case at the end of the month. I was going to pick it up but will probably just wait it out now.

Unfortunately I already have a copy of Full Metal cause it came in a boxset with Road Warrior & The Shining. I'm happy with the current version I have & most likely won't upgrade it.

Speaking of Warner Home Video, that gets us to today's big classic release news. The studio has informed us that they're planning on releasing a new 25th Anniversary Blu-ray Book edition of Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket on 7/3 (SRP $34.99). In addition to all the extras that were included on the previous Blu-ray and DVD releases (among them audio commentary by Adam Baldwin, Vincent D'Onofrio, R. Lee Ermey and critic/screenwriter Jay Cocks, the Full Metal Jacket: Between Good and Evil featurette and the theatrical trailer), this new edition will include - for the first time ever on disc - Jon Ronson's excellent Stanley Kubrick's Boxes documentary! What's more, the 44-page Blu-ray Book packaging will offer "a personal letter and intimate reflections from star Matthew Modine, as well as behind-the-scenes photos specifically selected for this release." Not bad. In combination with the recent news from our friends at Kino Lorber that they intend to release Kubrick's Fear and Desire, The Seafarers, Day of the Fight and The Flying Padre on Blu-ray and DVD (fully remastered from archival prints), 2012 is shaping up to be a great year for Kubrick fans. Here's a look at the packaging for the new release...

There's one other way in which this becomes interesting. Some of you might recall a post I made back in February of last year, in which I noted my suspicion (based on information from our industry sources) that WHV intended to revisit many of its Kubrick films in new special editions over the next four years given the fact that virtually all of them were going to be celebrating new anniversaries during that timeframe. To be specific, here's a list of them:

2012 - Lolita (50th), Full Metal Jacket (25th - BD/DVD already announced)

2013 - 2001: A Space Odyssey (45th)

2014 - Eyes Wide Shut (15th)

2015 - Barry Lyndon (40th), The Shining (35th)

As you can see, Full Metal Jacket has indeed been announced as predicted. So, we suspect, will most of these others come to pass. Obviously we'll post more information as it comes in.
which begs the question: will there ever be a "right time" to buy any of WB's Kubrick boxes? I bought the dvd set that was missing Lolita and Barry Lyndon, and regretted it before I even got through watching the whole thing, since all the blu rays became so cheap. Thankfully I passed on the recent blu box set, since issues like the Spartacus transfer and lopsided treatment of the films in terms of supplements have clearly shown that it's nowhere near a definitive release. I swear, I'm never going to feel completely secure purchasing any of their Kubrick releases, ever again. This is like Anchor Bay and their epic string of Evil Dead releases, only worse!

I really enjoy Full Metal Jacket and have yet to buy it on blu. There are only a select few Kubrick films I enjoy so a box set was never an option for me. I'll be buying this release when it comes out.

If only the Boxes documentary was to be included in the Kino boxset, I would be much happier. I don't want to re-buy this since the transfer is identical to the one I already own, but I have to have that Boxes documentary. Oh well.

I'm pretty pissed about Warner's handling of Kubrick on Blu-ray. This will be the third release of FMJ on Blu-ray and Lolita was only a year ago but they're coming out with a second on that as well. Plus Barry Lyndon had a fucked up aspect ratio that they're still being pig headed about. Putting Kubrick's Boxes on FMJis just icing on the shit cake. Glad I have it recorded.

At least put some more years in-between and a fresh 4k or even 8k transfer. A new transfer is what it'll take to get me interested in picking a new edition up. Otherwise forget about it.

Not a bad price 59.99 and no tax or shipping from Amazon on the current blu set:

I completely agree with you. At least we're getting all of his early work from Kino later this year. Hopefully it's not too expensive.

That is a good price. It's half the MSRP. I just picked up the Criterion Spartacus on Amazon for $9 since the blu-ray is a total disaster. The description indicated that it was in very good condition when in actuality it is in mint condition. I love it when that happens.
