Rabies (Kalevet) (2010) - Israel's first horror film!
![]() A brother and sister who run away from home find sanctuary in a deserted nature reserve. When the sister falls into the trap of a psychopathic killer, the brother sets out on a race against time to find help. In a twist of fate the rescue of the sister becomes inadvertently intertwined with the lives of a group of young tennis players, a ranger and his dog, as well as a team of policemen. Rabies is Israel's first horror film! I recently caught a screening at the Dark Bridges Film Festival and was completely blown away. If you get a chance, check it out! Damn, that looks really fucking good! I heard murmurs of this movie online and never really paid attention to it, and now I wish I had.

I caught a screening of this back in July. Here's a mini-review that I had posted on another message board:
Rabies was a fun theatrical experience, but I'm not really sure what to make of it. I suppose you could say it is a different take on familiar territory. I was expecting a "teens-in-the-woods" slasher flick, or maybe something along the lines of Cabin Fever. It may start out that way, but things unravel quite differently. First off, I didn't really get the title. No one in the film has rabies. I don't even think they mentioned it. I suppose it could be a metaphor for the little things that can drive a sane person to be insane. But don't let the title fool you into thinking the movie is about a rabies outbreak. Possible spoilers to follow. If I had to describe it, it is kind of like Tucker & Dale Vs Evil minus the blatant humor. The movie begins with a serial killer abducting a girl, and her brother goes for help. While looking for help, he encounters four teens on their way to a tennis match, who call the police. There is also a hunter and his girlfriend, who spot the killer with the girl and intervene. Between the killer, the brother and sister, the four teens, two police officers, and the hunter and his girlfriend, the bodies begin piling up. The thing is, it is not the killer who is doing the butchering. All of the deaths are a result of morbid misunderstandings between the characters (excluding a rather disturbing scene where a dog is killed). The movie is well made, and there are definitely effective moments (especially one scene involving a landmine). I enjoyed it, and it is always fun seeing a movie like this on the big screen. But it really wasn't what I was expecting. It is worth a look, but leave your expectations at the door. Last edited by CPT HOOK; 10-06-2011 at 07:49 AM. |

But yes, the title is not literal to the plot but more an underlying reference to the events in the film and how they spiral out of control, so I think it's a great title that works for the film.

I just saw this tonight and I loved it! Definitely one of the smartest "dumb teens get lost in the woods" horror movies I've seen. Bloody, disturbing, sad, and with a pitch-black sense of humor, this one spirals out of control without resorting to obvious cliches (cell phones work, the police are called, etc.).
Five thumbs up! |

I've been meaning to pick up the DVD, I enjoyed it in theaters.
Kind of funny that this thread would get bumped and two boardies watched it on the same night. The disc has been out for over a month now. |
