Kino Aquires Redemption Catalog / Announces Jean Rollin Blu-rays for 2012

Kino Lorber Acquires Rights to Redemption Films Library:
Quote:
Independent film company Kino Lorber has just announced its acquisition of the North American rights to the UK-based film library Redemption Films. The deal gives the studio access to a wide variety of cult and classic European horror films which Kino will release under its newly created "Redemption" label.

Up to thirty-five films will street on Blu-ray in 2012, with especially important entries receiving full HD masters from restored 35mm negatives.

First to Blu-ray in early 2012 will be Jean Rollin's erotic vampire films The Nude Vampire (1970), Shiver of the Vampires (1971), The Iron Rose (1973), Lips of Blood (1974), and Fascination (1979).

These five selections have the aforementioned restored HD transfers as well as a number of special features, including twenty-page essays from Tim Lucas, the editor of Video Watchdog magazine and author of Mario Bava: All the Colors of the Dark.

From Kino's official press release:

"In addition to the classic horror films of Jean Rollin, the Redemption Films library also includes Wes Craven's original The Hills Have Eyes: Part 2 (1985), Jack Cardiff's cult classic Girl on a Motorcycle (1968), Martin Campbell's (Casino Royale, Green Lantern) debut feature The Sex Thief (1974) and Italian horror legend Mario Bava's Hatchet for a Honeymoon (1970) among many others.

Kino Lorber V.P. Bret Wood, who curated the Rollin series and manages the Redemption brand, says: 'Having access to the original negatives of a director like Jean Rollin, who is ripe for critical reappraisal, is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for a DVD and Blu-ray producer like me. To be able to systematically and meticulously re-master the films in HD, curate an exciting blend of special features, and then, release these films as a cohesive body of work is a cineaste's dream come true.'

Kino Lorber President and C.E.O. Richard Lorber added: 'The Rollin collection is an ideal brand extension for our company, well known for great German horror and sci-fi classics going back to the silent era. Along with our restorations of Metropolis and Nosferatu, under our Redemption label we'll bring something new to our fans we believe they'll eagerly embrace. No cinephile or horror buff can resist Rollin's signature works...with his inimitable style that crosses Corman with Cocteau.' "

I suspect the 35 total given is Kino's entire Blu-ray output planned for 2012, not just Redemption. As great as this news is, there's also a hint of a restoration of Nosferatu on the level of Metropolis which Kino has done twice over now on Blu-ray.

Tim Lucas spilled the beans a little bit earlier in the week on Facebook and posted some screen shots which I've attached below. They've since been removed and I expect that's because the true transfers will be of better quality. Enjoy the the glimpse:

REALLY looking forward to the Rollin BDs! Here's hoping that they all come out on the same day...

I just recently finished buying all his movies on DVD - I'm not sure I'll go for these. Unless they look much better (and I buy a blu-ray player).

I'm always happy to see lesser known films make it to blu. Let's hope they do get an actual upgrade in quality.

I love Rollin, but not enough to upgrade what I have. I simply don't opt to watch his work all that often.

I picked up those great multi-disc Encore releases of Shiver of the Vampires and Lips of Blood so I don't know how soon I'll upgrade those, but I'll be all over the Fascination blu ray. And Hatchet for A Honeymoon!

Rollin and Hatchet I've bought so many years ago, including the Encore disks, that I really don't mind going for an upgrade sometime next year.

Brigitte Lahaie in HD? That's an easy choice.

Exciting news across the board. I've really grown to like Rollins and if the discs contain the extras from the multi-disc sets, I am definitely in. But, even if it's just a quality upgrade at a decent price, I'll still probably grab them.

And, I wonder if Hatchet is the only Bava they've picked up. It's one of my favorites of his films, but I am really hoping that Whip and the Body can get a nice upgrade as well.

A lot of people dismiss Hills 2 because of the flashbacks. I enjoy it quite a bit - it's actually a pretty good slasher film. An upgrade to Blu would be great. There's a lot of "ghosting" on that Image DVD. Hell, I'll take a properly mastered DVD if a BD is out of the question.

Grapes of Death wasn't part of the Redemption catalog so I doubt this would be one of the upcoming BD releases.
